Shadow Susanne (Paralegal)
Dev shadowed Susanne for the week. Being a Paralegal, the work he helped her on seemed much more administrative and procedural rather than substantive. Still, Susanne found it important to run through everything with Dev. She wanted him to understand what goes on in the background while the Fee-Earners do their work. "You've probably heard this a lot but solicitors should always be able to do what their support staff do. They should also make sure secretaries and paralegals are on their side. That's not a threat, mind you, it's just important not to forget how important this work is!" Susanne chuckled in a sweet, nurturing voice.
Dev understood why she was known as the mother of the department. While certainly not looking that old and, in truth being of a similar age to Shannon and the others, she seemed very conscientious and motherly in the way she chatted, explained work, and reacted.
Later down the week, he and Susanne sat in for a client meeting in a conference room, to hand over some copies of deeds and get a few signatures for one of Emma's clients while Emma was on a work trip. Dev took the minutes of the meeting and in the end, they all shook hands and the client left.
Dev asked Susanne some questions on the 'legalese' he wasn't quite sure about and noted everything he could for future reference. "It was definitely an overload of information, so thanks for filling in some of the blanks!"
Susanne, being her chatty self, quickly veered to talking about her life. "So this is my son, Kevin. He's about the same age as you, actually! But I do wish he would go to the gym more. He doesn't do much with his life besides play on his Nintendo. Still, I do want to give him space and treat him right, to make sure he becomes his own man," Susanne showed Dev pictures of her and Kevin on her phone.
"If I didn't know any better, I would've said you were siblings in that picture, Susanne..." Dev smile.
"My, what a bold young man, you are!" Susanne said with her mouth open wide in astonishment.
"It's only the truth. Whatever you're doing at the gym definitely works, it's a shame if Kevin doesn't understand how useful working on yourself can be," they gazed at each other before Susanne collected the signed documents and ended the meeting recap.
Does Dev say anything more while he's alone with Susanne, or continue to work for the rest of the week?
