Chapter 13

Seeing the doctor
In the waiting room, John was nothing if not a bundle of nerves. Between repeated checks of his watch and bouts of bouncing his knee, he would ask Robin about his symptoms. Robin was sure that if he wasn't holding John's hand, John would have have been running around the halls looking for a doctor. Once the doctor did arrive, John remained tense and continued to hold Robin's hand. Robin groaned knowing that John was going to make this experience as awkward as it could possibly be. The doctor greeted them both before sitting at a small desk that supported a monitor and keyboard.
“Robin, correct?” He asked pulling up his file.
“That's right.”
“Just give me a second,” The doctor looked over the write up quickly to get the basic information that John had provided.
Name: Robin Lee
Gender: Female
Reason for Visit: Found **** outside and may have a concussion. She woke up very sick.
The doctor didn't notice anything out of the ordinary involving family history or allergies. The only other thing of note was that the patient was missing some inoculations. He planed to handle that once he was sure there wasn't a serious situation on their hands. He scooted over to Robin and pulled out a small flashlight from his breast pocket.
“Can you tell me what brings you here today?” he asked Robin while shining a light into his eye.
“I tripped on my way into our apartment from the laundromat,” Robin tried not to close his eyes.
“Um...you didn't have laundry when I found you,” John pipped up.
The doctor glanced toward John and then back to Robin with a look of concern.
“I know. My clothes were stolen when I stepped out for a little while,” Robin explained more to the doctor than John.
“Oh, honey. I'm sorry that happened but why didn't you wait? I would have washed your things,” John punctuated with a squeeze of John's hand.
“I was sick, not helpless,” Robin wondered if John's ex had to deal with his smothering before remembering how much he hated her for how she treated John.
“When did you start feeling sick?” The doctor asked while taking Robin's blood pressure.
“Uh...this morning.”
“What are your symptoms?”
“I'm feeling better.”
“Stomach problems? Nausea? Lightheadedness?”
“Yep...all three,” Robin lied.
“Any other flu like symptoms?”
“Uh...sore throat?”
“Just another second,” The doctor scooted back to his desk and typed a few notes.
“What do you think it is?” John asked.
“First, Robin, you have a mild concussion. You are going to need rest and limit your physical activity. If you start noticing headaches, you can take acetaminophen for it. You should be back to normal after a week, a month at most. If symptoms persist after or get worse before then, you will need to come back in. As for the cold, it looks like that has cleared up.
Robin, it says here you haven't gotten the flu shot. Is that right?”
“I haven't had any shots since high school.”
“Well, before I let you go, I think we should get you up to schedule. Flue, tetanus, and anything else you could use.”
“Whatever you say, doc.”
With that, the doctor left the two of them alone. John gave what he assumed was a comforting rub of his thumb along Robin's ensnared hand. Soon, the doctor was back with a paper which he handed to John containing information on concussions before giving Robin his shots. Unfortunately for Robin, some of the shots were not meant for men and it wouldn't be long before there would be side effects.
Later, Robin sat in the wheelchair with a nurse behind him while they waited for John to pull up with the car. He felt like he was fine to walk out himself but the hospital wouldn't allow it. Robin loathed feeling like he had no control and that's all his day was. He sighed as John pulled up in front of them, knowing that the day was almost over. John rushed over to the passenger seat and opened the door before coming over to help Robin stand. The nurse wheeled the chair away once it was clear that they were fine while John guided Robin over to his seat. His steps were more wobbly than expected, having not registered that he was wearing heeled boots but even so, he managed with John's help.
Once home, Robin was sat on the couch while John fixed them dinner. It was only after sitting there alone with his thoughts that he remembered that he had gotten a texted earlier. After he fished out his phone, he was shocked by the message.
“Babe, everything okay?” John asked, seeing Robin's expression.
“...I've been fired.”
It was all too much for Robin. After so many things going wrong, he broke down into tears. John rushed over to join his side and carefully pulled Robin into his arms. Robin sobbed as John left gentle kisses on his head.
