Chapter 4
by Funatic
What's next? The festivities? Something else entirely?
Securing a date.
Three days later Lacos was jumping from one foot on the other in the kitchen. “Waiting again?” The chef, a big bald man with arms that showed that he was regularly cleaving apart large animals, asked. “Yes.” “You normally aren’t this nervous.” “Yes.” The chef huffed, “Wow, well, here she comes.” He was referring to the noise of footsteps in the hall and true enough the door opened.
A twenty-year-old brunette maid stepped in. She wore a plain grey uniform that hid her curves pretty well but Lacos knew that while not exactly impressive the maids slim figure was definitely sexy. Her teardrop shaped face was covered in freckles, her brown hair bound to a ponytail that whipped as she walked into the kitchen.
Reiline had been somebody Lacos had a crush on for over a year and the feeling was evidently mutual but the lack of free time had prevented them from ever forming more than a shallow relationship. Much to the frustration of everyone else of the servants. Gossip was an easy entertainment in these times and the two of them dancing around each other had been funny for a while but by now it was just ****.
The only regular meetings the two could have was every morning when Reiline got the bread for the servant’s breakfast, but even this got less common as the Princesses anxiety grew with each passing day. “Lacos!” It was a pleasantly surprised shout as Reiline walked towards him. “I didn’t expect you to be here.” “Morning, Reiline. I made time.” In truth he had sneaked out of his quarters very early so Stef never got the chance to call him. Something he would be reprimanded for with certainty.
“Mind if I help you?” “Not at all!” They each grabbed a tablet of bread and went on their way. “Don’t forget to bring them back!” The chef shouted after them. “So, what have you been up to these days?” Lacos asked, “Cleaning diligently, as always.” Reiline exclaimed and gave him a wide smile. “You know my stories aren’t very interesting. I don’t saw of other people’s legs to save their lives.” “I only did that once, and it wasn’t pleasant.” Lacos defended himself. “But you underestimate yourself; I remember that one time you found an old wine cellar everyone had forgotten about.” Reiline chuckled, “Yes, we are still cleaning that as well. Instead of just dust it is also spilled and spoiled wine that fell out of the shelves.” She turned her eyes, “Veeery interesting.” “I like to hear it!” Reiline glances at him, “Seems so. What is going on with you these days?”
“Helping the Princess. Have you heard about the festival coming up?” Reiline nodded, “Yes, it’s spreading through the city too. Everyone expected it to happen eventually.” She sighed, as she pushed open the door to the servants living room. Inside a myriad of servants were chattering. “I wish I could witness such an event once.” That was exactly the phrase Lacos had been hoping for. However the crowd was bit bigger, meaning it existed, than he wished. ‘No backing of now, you lizard.’ He urged himself. “So, truth be told I am invited.” He carefully said as he put the tablet on the table. A couple of heads turned to listen very carefully. “And the Princess said I could bring somebody.” Reiline stared at him with wide open eyes, “You mean to say…?” “Want to be my date?” The servants started applauding.
Lacos had no idea when they started chatting but all over the room shouts of “He did it!” “Progress!” and “FINALLY!” started popping up. Lacos scratched the back of his head and laughed a bit sheepishly. Reiline on the other hand did not want to have any of it. “Just go eat you lazy butts!” She then turned back to Lacos when they did so, although they still started talking about the two. “I would love to come, I hope I can find something wear…. Worries for latter, want to stay for breakfast?”
His answer came in the form of Stef bursting through the door. “There you are!” He growled and grabbed Lacos by the collar. “Sorry, seems I have an appointment.” Lacos said and grabbed a bun as he was dragged away, “See you soon.”
Will he? When?
