Chapter 6 by jealco jealco

Search the room, or just get going?

Search the room

There's no way you'll make it far in this dungeon unarmored, much less unarmed. With a quiet sigh, you move over to where the bodies are, and begin to go through their gear, hoping there would be something, anything here to give you some slim chance at surviving this dungeon.

Fifteen minutes later, you've gone through the entirety of the room, and gathered what little useful items you'd found into a small pile next to the table. Luckily for you, you'd found two weapons, a steel-headed spear, and a rather rusty iron dagger. The spear was in surprisingly good shape, a little rusty on the head, but still somewhat sharp, and it's haft was still solid. It wasn't your first choice of weapon, but it would have to do for the moment. The dagger was definitely dull, the rust thick upon it's blade. The scabbard and belt had survived as well. There was also a sharpening stone in the remnants of a pouch, which you intended to put to use on the dagger and spear before you left the room.

You had been much less lucky in the armor department. The bulk of the armor that had survived this long was steel plate, which was vastly too heavy for you to make use of. A few of the bodies had been wearing leather armors, though, which you'd picked over with a fine-toothed comb. Most of it had been unwearable, time rotting it away, though you had found a few bits that were useful to you. You'd found a leather breastplate whose bottom portion had been ravaged by claws, but the chest portion was still intact and serviceable. The left pauldron, armguard, and bracer had survived intact, as well as the thigh guards and greaves. The body you found those bits on was clearly female, too, judging by the sizing of the armor. It looked as though it would fit you, albeit snugly.

Strangely, though, some of the armor had been missing, mainly from the steel-plated bodies, though the boots of the woman whose leathers you had claimed were missing, too. What worried you about that was having no idea when they had been taken. There might be someone else who had been banished here somewhere in these tunnels, and that thought worried you immensely. You could only hope they'd come long before you.

Shaking the thought from your head, you quickly donned what little armor you'd found, briefly cursing both whoever had taken the one set of boots that may have fit you, and the way the straps of your arm and leg armor dug into your bare flesh. You'd been right about the fit. The breastplate was definitely snug, smashing your breasts down a bit, but you could move in it, and that was all you cared about.

After getting the armor on, you spent some time trying to sharpen your spear and dagger, pausing every few moments to listen, in case something heard you scraping away at the blades. Thankfully, nothing interrupted you. While you'd improved the condition of the blades immensely, they still needed hours more work apiece to properly finish them, time you didn't have, with the limited state of your rations. You needed to move, to locate more food and water, before you would consider investing more time in them.

After eating a small portion of your rations, you rose, turning towards the tunnel. A fleeting thought passed through your head, as you imagined just how ridiculous you must look, standing there barefoot, wearing nothing but a short, tattered burlap shift and about half a set of equally tattered leather armor. You shoved that thought out of your mind as well, and padded up the smooth, cold stone tunnel floor into the unknown.

Where does the tunnel lead to?
