Chapter 8 by RadioGalaxy RadioGalaxy

Orientation:

Schools of Magic and Clans

Jack had never seen anything so... Opulent. The inside of the great hall made any pictures of old european castles or even drawings and stories about fantasy ones seem dinky in comparrison to the majestic surroundings. The hall itself was a mammoth rectangular room edged with incredile support pillars of marble or some foreign stone, and entirely filled with paintings and tapestries of very magical sights or dignified and intelligent looking people. There were six long and beautifully carved wooden tables each in a different color leading from the front doors up to the end of the hall where one long table stood perpendicular to the other six. There many people of all races scattered amongst the empty tables at the equally fine wooden benchs of respective color.

Avendra put a hand on Jack and Petra's shoulders, steering them to sit at the red table (one of the two closest to the main entrance,) and smilied down at them past her modest bust. "I have to head to the teacher's table at the far end there, just wait here until it comes time for everyone to be tested for their magical potential. After that, depending on what you are proven to be good at you will be assigned to the schools of magic that best fit your abilities and then you may choose one of the six clans to join to decide where you live. Each of the six tables are colored according to clan but for now it does not matter where you sit. Try to behave yourself..." She spouts from memory, throwing in a last little jab at Jack. "It's not my fault some jerk broke his hand on me..." Jack grinned sheepishly, winking conspiritorially to Petra who just giggled quietly, looking away with a bit of a blush. The half-elf just rolled her eyes and as she started to walk off Jack felt a pinch on his ass which made him jump.

During this time Jack had petra explain to him the different schools of magic as he was still clueless. There was Elemental magic which Avendra was a teacher of, which was the harnessing of the power of nature using your own body as a conduit to create spells and control elements. Battle magic was used for strengthening and altering your physical body, as well as utilizing the magical power of your own spirit (ki), to cast. The Arcane school of magic was used for battle of the mind, and the changing of thoughts or memorys, besides which users could also use mild forms of psychokenisis. Enhancement magic was used in magical forging of weapons, armors, and implements for adventurers as well as enchanting non-magical items. Practitioners of holy magic were primarily religious with a connection to a god, and were healers and users of light and darkness magics. Summoning was the school which allowed people to form pacts with monsters or demons to tame them or make deals, as well as the school of alchemy which was the equivalent exchange of items for others via demon markets.

Jack hung on every word, staring and open-mouthed, making the girl blush brighter the longer she talked. The two waited, making light conversation until the hall was filled to about a fourth of its capacity. Without warning a green girl with dark hair dropped heavily into the seat across from Jack and leaned her back against the table, arching her back and emphasizing her small, barely covered breasts as she gave out a large sigh. Her skin was a light green, and her very short black hair looked almost boyish. She was barely clothed, wearing only bandages across her chest, creating a nice little valley, and a loincloth to cover her more sensitive bits. She was muscled like a panther, very lithe and sleek, but was still very skinny and quite short for an orc. Not expecting the new visitor both he and Petra turned to look at the girl curiously. She looked at the two of them upside-down as if she had just noticed them, and gave a wild grin.

"AH, didn't notice ya there! I'm Kara. You guys new huh? I remember when I was new, it was pretty wild shit! You guys decide which clan you'll join yet?" The girl rattled off, stretching her arms along the table and keeping her amber-eyed gaze trained on them upside down. They both greeted Kara and Jack admited he didn't know any of the clans nor what they stood for. In about the span of two minutes the orcish girl had rapid-fired a brief description of each including which color table corresponded to each.

The Empress Clan was mostly made up of those of noble birth as well as their servants, and those with famous bloodlines or incredible talent were the most likely to enter their ranks. The Strength Clan collected many battle magic users as well as those who coveted power above all else in the world. The Justice Clan were dedicated to living honorably and were seekers of glory, just like knights of some old kingdom. The Lovers Clan was entirely made up of pacifists and practitioners of healing magic who figured love was the strongest of magics. The Heirophant Clan were all religious zealots and those devoted to the paths of their respective gods, causing a lot of internal strife at times. The Fool Clan was for those more free-spirited and less bound by lofty goals, more acustomed to the bonds of friendship.

After the tirade Kara had to take a deep breath and laid back on the table, pushing her breasts up again. Before Jack and Petra could fully comprehend all of this there was a loud and strange rushing noise from the front of the hall. Hundreds of small neon blue, glowing orbs of light had materialized in mid-air and were quickly begining to coalesce into a whirlwind before the teacher's table. After a few seconds of rushing the orbs suddenly burst with a huge flash in all directions before dissapating, causing hundreds of people to jump all at once. Where the whirlwind of light had been seconds before stood an older woman in extravigant robes of deep purples and golds. She was very tall, and unnaturally beautiful. Her age could only be seen in the color of her silvery hair and the very faint lines at the corner of her eyes. Her face was cold and elegant, giving her an extremely regal air, and her ice blue eyes glowed unaturally. She was most defintiely elven and everyone knew in an instant that this was the Grand Overseer.

A speech and a test.
