Magical Potential

The Overseer stood statuesque in the center of the great hall, casting her piercing gaze over all of the new student applicants. She waved her hand once and several students were cast in bright spotlights with seemingly no source at all, making them stand out against the others around them. "All of those who are in the lights, leave immediately. You have no magical potential and and no amount of mystical pursuit or powerful items will change this fact. Put your time behind other pursuits and move past this," came a deeply powerful but soft, sorrowful voice. The indicated people all looked furious, but quickly stood and left the hall as if they had expected this but came anyway. Petra fearfully grabbed Jack's sleve, silently praying a light would not fall on her.

After the hopeless students shuffled out, the grand entrance doors swung shut with a cacophonous boom. Thick, royal red and gold curtains swung shut all around the hall, blocking all light from the windows and cast the entire room into darkness. A soft blue glow came from the ground of the hall, making it seem like some otherworldly plane they had stepped into, and giving just enough light for Jack to see all the tables and the Overseer but nothing besides. The woman nodded once and cast another gaze around at the lot of them. "I am your Overseer, Ariadne Lunaris. I welcome those of you remaining to this, my Dalas Academy. Here you will begin the mystical pursuits that will guide you to greater learning throughout your entire life. Some of you will go on to be extraordinary mages, others will become fine tradesman or some others will go on to fulfill other roles. During this orientation, we will reveal your hidden potential and place you into the school of magic that suits you most closely. Depending on results some of you may be placed into multiple schools, and only afterwards may you choose your Clan. You clan is where you will live and those you will be closest to during your stay here. Let us begin!"

With another wave and flash of blue lights the Overseer had appeared behind the teachers table at the head. In front of each of the teachers appeared a single stool and they began to call people to the front, seemingly already aware of the names of every single person there. Jack figured this was due to the guild licenses as Avendra had explained to he and Petra that they could not enter the invisible barrier outside the grounds without one. Kara tapped on the table to catch their attention while people began to head towards the front. "Hey, I'm already a student here, so lemme know what clans you guys chose and your magic level and stuff later. I gotta I get to class! Lets meet back up here for dinner~" She grinned, leaping over the table a surprising distance and patting the both of them on their heads on the way past. She ran out into the darkness, leaving Petra and Jack to look at each other nervously.

"So um... what Clan do you think you'll join?" Jack asked quietly, silently happy about the scared girl clutching at his clothes. "I d-don't know... I hope we get in the same one though..." Was her quiet response, before a jolly man with a booming voice yelled out "PETRA CLAES!" The girl jumped about a mile in her seat and gave Jack an embarrassed nod and a half-smile before running off up the aisle. He sat by himself for another fifteen minutes, silently praying that he wasn't as mediocre at this as he was everything in his previous life. He wasn't afraid of unknown magics, monsters, alien races, or even the threat of **** all adventurers faced when they finally got out into the world. All he feared was living in regret again.

"Jack Valent..." Rang out a soft, but commanding voice.
