Chapter 17 by Mngwas Mngwas

The Task at Hand

Schedule Inconsistencies

He reached into his messenger bag once more and this time Sarah craned her neck to try and see what he was feverishly rooting around for. It was another set of documents, but this time it appeared to be handwritten notes.

“A these the therapists?” Sarah half admonished, half quizzed Martin as she leaned over to read the hastily scribbled notes.

“Mine, actually. I did some research into our friend Mr. Doyle here and found out some interesting things. Inconsistencies in his schedule mostly.” He explicated as he drew his pen down a rudimentary sketch of the campus’ northern half as well as Doyle’s class schedule.

“Has it registered at all that I still haven’t agreed to any of this?” Sarah grumbled, the frustration creating a disjointed and unpleasant rasp in her normally smooth voice. Martin continued rattling on as though she had said nothing, unphased by her protest.

“Relax, Sarah. All the dean wants us to do is collect some extra-curricular data and report it to him so that he and this third benefactor can determine whether Mr. Doyle is a danger to himself or the school at large. But why use us?” He asked, fiddling with his glasses again as if to emphasize the mystery of his question. Before Sarah could offer a theory of her own, he finished his sentence, “But the fact that he has already violated so many rules to make this inquiry in the first place has basically confirmed that there is something wrong.”

“So, you think the school has it out for Sam in some way? I don’t have time for this, if you want my help, everything you know has to be everything I know as well.” Sarah admonished.

“Fair enough. But you’re going to be disappointed. I wasn’t lying when I said that I was almost as in the dark as you. The only thing I can say for sure is we’re definitely being used.” Martin said curtly.

“So, you know for a fact that my career is over when this is all over and we submit that report?” Sarah.

“No. Look, what I’m trying to say here is,” Martin whispered, leaning in to close an already small gap between the two, “I don’t think our job is to find out if there is something wrong. It’s about assessing how wrong things have already gone.”
