Chapter 46 by Drakavius Drakavius

Who do we follow as the hotel falls to the Idol?

Sasha and Eric Ex-Highschool Lovers

Sasha held a hand to her beating chest, fighting to keep her heavy breathing quiet as she gazed through the shadowy wood lot for signs of movement. Her body was on edge with adrenaline as she tried to push the thoughts of what she had seen from her head.

Hearing the sway of something moving through the sappling over growth she froze. She could just make out the movement. Holding her breath she heard a branch break, laboured breathing… Careful not to move too much she stared waiting for her eyes to adjust, to make out the man's shape, his suit jacket discarded in aggravation as it snagged on something.

There were sobs… Were they crying?

Staying still she watched as the contours of the ground and vegetation guided the figure towards her.

“They'll pay for this Cara.” He muttered, to himself his voice and the name widening Sasha's eyes as she realized who it was.

“Eric.” Sasha called in a hushed voice her gesture to come over barely visible to him in the darkness.

“No surprise you made it.” Eric remarked giving Sasha a half hearted hug.

“The marathon training didn't help with the sprint. What were those things in the gardens?”Sasha asked, relieved to find she wasn't alone in getting this far. Others might have already made it to get help.

“No idea. Bigger than any wolf. Not to mention they weren't predating.” Eric uttered coldly, trying to expel the last words his sister called to him after getting caught by one of the beasts fleeing what ever it was going on in the reception.

“I uh.. Try not to think about it.” Sasha replied putting an arm around Eric.

In highschool they dated a while, helped with each other's athletics training, but after highschool Eric moved away to pursue survival training and education to be a conservation officer. Obviously it kept him fit.

“We should call someone.” Sasha remarked as the two regained their breath.

“Haven't you tried?” Eric asked, provoking a gesture of ‘do I look like I have some place for a phone' from the woman in a slender mid length dress.

“I'm just grateful I didn't wear heels.” Sasha then added.

Eric handed her his phone, “Keep it pointed down, don't turn on the flashlight.” He cautioned gazing about as Sasha's face was momentary illuminated by the blueish white light of the screen.

The background was a picture from their night before grad, Sasha almost forgot what she was doing when she noticed it. Looking more thoroughly at the screen she felt a pit in her stomach.

NO SIGNAL

That was impossible. Gazing around Sasha muttered incoherently.

“There was a tower on the hotel. They must've cut the service.” Eric sullenly mentioned looking around to try and get his bearing. “The road should be somewhere that way.” He sighed, slinking his shoulders. “We should get moving. Before anything finds us.”

Eric took Sasha's hand leading the way as carefully as he could towards where the road should be. They paused frequently to listen for anything else coming, eventually being rewarded with the distant sound of cars periodically whipping by.

A distant hope that reinvigorated their silent darkened escape.

As a glow appeared between the trees the duo pf ex lovers rushed forward, eager to once again stand in the comfort of light, **** to flag someone down to race them off to get the police, military, any help really.

Breaking from the brush the two almost stumbled as they exited into the open, pausing wide eyed at what stood before them.

What stands before them?
