Sarah as his mom
Tom lingered at the edge of the hallway, the sound of clinking dishes and the faint rhythm of Sarah’s movements drifting in from the kitchen. It was Friday afternoon — school should’ve been his reality now, but in this strange, rewritten life, he’d just gotten home. Or rather… this body had.
He stepped into the kitchen doorway.
Sarah stood at the counter, dressed in snug jeans and a soft navy sweater. Her hair was pulled back loosely, a few strands escaping to frame her face. She looked effortlessly put together in that way she always had, but seeing her like this — as his mother — gave the sight a dangerous new edge.
“Hey, you’re home early,” she said with a smile, glancing up from where she was sliding chopped vegetables into a pan. The late-day sun caught the gold in her hair, and Tom had to fight not to stare too long.
“Yeah. Last period was study hall, so…” He shrugged, trying to sound like the teenager the world thought he was.
Sarah moved toward the fridge, passing close enough that her shoulder brushed lightly against his chest. The touch was nothing in her mind — a casual pass in a familiar kitchen — but Tom felt the heat of it burn through the thin layer of his t-shirt.
She pulled out a bottle of iced tea and set it on the counter. “Want some?”
He nodded. She poured a glass and slid it toward him, the gesture smooth, practiced. Her fingers lingered near his just long enough to spark that low hum in his blood, the kind of accidental intimacy that wouldn’t have fazed her a bit, but left him locked in a tug-of-war between instinct and restraint.
She glanced at him while stirring the vegetables. “You’ve been quiet this week. Everything okay?”
The concern in her voice was pure, but the tone — soft, warm — stirred him in ways that felt wrong now, even though they’d been perfectly natural in his old life.
“I’m fine,” he said, though his voice came out softer than he intended.
Sarah gave a little smile. “If you say so.” She moved past him again, this time with a cutting board in her hands, the faint scent of her perfume trailing after her — something floral with a sharper edge underneath.
Every small movement, every look, every whiff of her scent felt amplified in this new reality. And he knew, with an uneasy certainty, that these weren’t just his reactions — they were the ingrained, lived-in impulses of the boy whose life he had inherited.
