Chapter 164
by brevdravis
Sammiches... sandviches...sandwiches. Whatever.
Sandwiches and beers
When I finally managed to drag myself into some semblance of order, I found that I was the last one to do so. Watching both Nikki and Helen gather up their clothes and dress was a delight as I lay on the bed. No major issue for me at that point, as I was quite satisfied. Finding clothes was no big deal, as they still were pretty much everywhere. I was indeed glad that Charlotte had reminded me about the whole laundry thing, as it was one chore I never really enjoyed, and it would be very nice to get out of my turn for a few weeks.
The sight of a nicely sliced sandwich, sitting on a plate greeted my vision on the table when I exited the bedroom, still a bit rumpled and looking rather exhausted. Kaila had done... well, it was a thing of beauty I must say. Complete with a cold beer, sitting right next to it, the moisture condensing on the surface. With the four women sitting around on an open hide a bed and chairs and eating similar food at the time, it looked like something right out of a commercial for guys from the nineties.
"Thank you!" I said to Kaila, who held up one finger as she took a bite, swallowed carefully and ran her tongue around her lips before responding.
"You're welcome. And... wow that pissed me off. For some reason." She said softly. "I don't know why it pissed me off so much, but the entire time I was walking into the kitchen, I just kept... wanting to hurt you."
"You put Horseradish on it, I was expecting a little pain anyway."
"Yeah, but... why did that piss me off so much? Really. I mean, it took all of what... five minutes? Ten if you count those fucking onions. And I'm holding you to that promise." Kaila mused. "But for some reason you asking me to make... a sandwich... just..."
"We made good sandwiches, Kay." Charlie responded. "And how often does he do that?"
"Like, that's the first time he's ever asked..." Kaila said. "I mean... like ever, but somehow, I'm still mad."
"Because... you know... It's sexist. Or it's supposed to be." Helen shrugged. "But I wanted a sandwich too, and you were up, so..." She took a quick swig from the brown bottle. "Not a bad beer, but you gotta try some of the Australian ales."
"I don't normally drink that much any more." I explained, grabbing a seat next to Kaila at the table. I quickly opened my own bottle and took a sip. The cool liquid was nice on my rather raw throat at the moment, and I guessed I must be a little dehydrated. Well, shit. Need to drink some water too.
"So... Kaila Hon, if you wouldn't mind getting up and getting me a glass of water? Please?" I asked nicely.
"I... " Kaila started. "Fuck... ok... so why doesn't that make me angry?" She stood easily and walked to the small kitchen, filling a glass tumbler, and returning to sit at the table next to me.
"Thank you." I shrugged, taking a bite. Charlotte had been right. It was really good. "I wish you would cook more, you're really a lot better than you think."
"I'll take you over to my mother's house sometime. Trust me, you'll have more food thrown at you den you know what to do with." Nikki laughed, also enjoying the nicely prepared meal. "It's how she says I love you."
I sipped at the glass of water, enjoying the quiet subdued moment. Kaila seemed almost tranquil, musing on something as she looked out the window.
"You ok?" I asked after a few moments, noting that she hadn't said anything.
"Angry. Like... violent angry. Like considering putting things in your food angry." Kaila shook her head. "I just... of all the weird things to get ANGRY about, why is this the one thing that makes me so angry? It's a fucking... it's just a SANDWICH. I mean... why?"
"You didn't, right?" I said around a mouthful.
"I'm not THAT much of a bitch, but the thought was there for some reason." Kaila shrugged.
"Cause every time a guy says it, you just wanna punch him?" Helen remarked. "First impulse in my head before my stomach rumbled."
"You two have some seriously messed up wiring," Nikki murmured. "This has gotta be a California blonde thing. Food is love."
"I mean it's not like I said it like this.... Ahem... Girl, shut up and go make me a sandwich." I said in the best redneck voice I could imitate.
"Yeah, I take it back, dat would have been deserving of a punch, agreed." Nikki commented.
"Girl, shut up, and go make me a sandwich." Helen told Nikki, doing her best impression of my impression of a bad redneck voice. "Still worth a punch?"
"Oh... now dat's just cheating!" Nikki growled. "You shut up and go make me a sandwich!" She pointed an accusing finger at the short haired blonde.
"No, no... don't start with that crap. Ugh, you two are gonna start sounding like my sister with her white boards and charts. I swear she was gonna do a duty roster at the apartment before I talked her down." Kaila threw up her hands. "Ok, it's irrational. It just... makes me mad for some reason."
