Chapter 2
by Daylan
Who are you?
Sam, Native Of An Unknown Planet Called "Earth"
The Unknown Sectors of the Galactic Spheres are, as the name suggests, areas of space where planets with the potential for intelligent life are believed to exist but it is unknown if either those planets or life actually do exist. This lack of knowledge is mostly due to two factors: They have not yet been explored and no life from within them has yet reached out to make contact on their own with one of the various space alliances that are on their borders. The former reason also has several addition complex factors of its own ranging from the political, economical, and the ethical that made problems for any exploration.
Or at least, those factors were problems for those who acted publicly.
In the shadows the powers of ambition, greed, and the willingness to break the rules for ones personal gain ruled ones actions. Thus, criminal excursions into the uncharted regions had the potential for much profit and power as new and unique resources, rarities, and exploitable lifeforms began to filter into the underworld.
As the competition for new valuables intensified, and those who enforced the borders began to better guard the most commonly exploited regions, journeys deeper and deeper into the unknown became required. However, not all of these journeys were successful and many ended with the true fates of those who undertook them forever being unknown. Occasionally a space vessel either abandoned or with all hands lost would be found floating in the void, its inertia carrying it back into familiar lands far too late to find safety. Any such lost vessel was immediately seized and searched, both to discover any clue of the ringleaders of the illegal raid and to see if anything could be learned about any cultures the criminals may have encountered before they met their ends.
And upon one of those ships is where you enter the story.
The agents of the Starlane Guard, when they boarded the aimlessly drifting vessel, they expected to find the usual things: Alien forms of art or clothing, common minerals and metals in high demand or new ones that could be sold for an even higher price, animals meant to be exotic foods or pets, and even the occasional new form of **** of both the medicinal and recreational varieties. They were utterly unprepared to discover the tiny, shivering, dirty, malnourished, and clearly sentient creature that was being held inside of a filthy, far too small cage.
You were rescued, quarantined, cleaned, fed, examined, and asked a million questions in a million languages you did not understand, as you were only just old enough at the time to truly start grasping your own. After several days and a battery of methods to bridge the language barrier, they were able to piece together the key elements of your story.
Your home planet was one deeper than any had gone before into the Unknown Sectors called "Earth". You referred to your species as "Human" and your name was Sam. Any other information beyond that was unavailable as you could not speak with your captors, who had all died from some unknown disease on the return trip, and the coordinates to your "Earth" had been lost when the mainframe of the ship had been erased upon the captain's ****.
So now you live, a strange creature even among the many alien races trying to find a place to belong or even a clue that might point you in the direction of your original home. Your easily demonstrable sentience has allowed you a certain number of rights among the alien community so you are allowed some autonomy, though for your own safety you are kept under a form of watch at all times. You live in your own place and can even go out in public so long as you have a bodyguard in tow or are in the company of someone vetted by your protectors. Your unique nature makes you a curiosity to most aliens you meet and even nets you some dates with the more adventurous ones once you are old enough for such activities.
Still, sometimes you look up at the stars and wonder if you can find the one that is your birthplace among them. Is there a family back there waiting for you? Grieving you? Could you make a life here, like this, without ever knowing for sure why you, of all creatures on your planet, were taken? If there was something special about you, would you be able to discover it here?
You are a weird creature, after all. Why would you not have a weird destiny?
Are You Male Or Female?

Humans are Weird.
In space, humans find themselves outliers.
A collection of stories set in either continuous or disparate universes where humans are in some way an outlier, rather than being boring or predictable. (Cover art used with permission from @tonythew1z4rd on instagram)
