Ruby Enters

Chapter 4 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

Ruby steps into the space Cheryl just left, timing so precise it almost feels deliberate. She is athletic in a different way, lean from long weekend rides on her road bike, shoulders strong and posture easy. Where Cheryl carries herself like she owns the floor, Ruby moves like she would rather not be noticed until she decides otherwise.

She glances after Cheryl’s retreating back and lets out a quiet, unmistakable sigh of dislike.

“Christ,” she mutters, dropping into the spare chair beside your desk. “Does she ever stop performing? I could hear that little power play from three cubicles over.”

You and Ruby have always been close, closer than most coworkers manage. She reminds you of your sister in the best ways: same dry humor, same habit of cutting straight through nonsense. At enough staff socials the two of you have drifted into corners with drinks and talked too candidly about the quiet failures of married life. She knows about the dry spell at home. You know about the polite distance that has settled between her and her husband. Those conversations have built a trust that feels almost familial, which only makes the occasional flicker of awareness between you more complicated.

Ruby sets a fresh coffee on your desk without asking. “She already claimed the late slot in B, didn’t she?”

You nod.

“Of course she did. Classic Cheryl. Offer help with one hand while sharpening the knife with the other.” Ruby leans in a little, voice dropping. “You do not have to go alone. I can sit in. Keep the meeting from turning into whatever performance she has planned. Or we can just grab a drink after and ignore her entirely. Your call.”

She watches you with that open, familiar expression, the one that has always made it easy to tell her things you would never say to anyone else in the building.
