Among marble columns and colorful togas was the imperious Livia. She could and did have whatever it was she wished. She was of the wealthy patrician class, and so entitled to great glories and honors, her family had five hundred slaves and rented them out to mines and as oarsmen. The chattel of her family was busy above, below, and off the land, all for her. The only child of a loving marriage, cut short, Livia was spoiled incessantly, and was even favored by the Emperor with an audience when she was but 16 years old.
