Rom-com.

"I guess we can watch a rom-com," Jonathan shrugged, not really caring what to watch.

"Which one?" Zoe asked.

"I have to pick that as well?" Jonathan sputtered.

"Yes," Zoe nodded, handing him the remote.

"Fine," he huffed and scrolled through the massive playlist. "What about Pretty Woman?"

"I think it's safe to say that we all seen it!" Allison yelled out. The rest of the women nodded.

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin?" Jonathan snickered.

"How is that a rom com?" Natalie asked Zoe.

"It's a comedy with a bit of romance!" Zoe countered.

"Knocked up?" Jonathan asked.

"No thanks if it's with Seth Rogen!" Allison shouted out to laughter by the other women who understood her double entendre.

"Okay, what about Crazy Rich Asians?" Jonathan sighed as he continued to go through the list of movies that a couple of the women would veto.

"I've seen it already," Ming Yue replied and most of the crew nodded.

"Michelle Yeoh reminds me of your mother," Hane remarked with a smile.

"I don't see the resemblance," Jonathan replied, shaking his head. "What about Knocked Up?"

"By you or Seth Rogen?" Allison yelled out. The girls laughed.

"Okay, I think we're running out of movies that none of you have seen before!" Jonathan exclaimed. "Has anyone seen Always Be My Maybe?"

Everyone shook their head.

"Okay, we're watching that movie!" he shouted. Everyone cheered and settled in their seats as he hit the play button.

"San Francisco represent!" Zoe cheered at the opening scene with the pre-teen version of Randall Park and Ali Wong's characters of Markus Kim and Sasha Tran, respectively. The movie recycles a tried-and-true recipe of a rom-com with a boy and girl growing up as next door neighbors and close friends but never lovers until the fateful night after Marcus' sweet, sacrificing mother's funeral.

Cindy glanced over to notice Jonathan tear up when Markus snapped at Sasha in a Burger King after they recovering from having taken each other's virginity in his car. She suspected he was relating to Markus' hurt after losing his mother — she wondered how close he was to his father and if he had also lost a love due to that?

The movie dutifully ticked all of the expected boxes of what everyone expects with a typical rom-com while poignantly engaged with the Asian-American experience from familial, societal and professional angles that the entire crew could relate to. Everyone was surprised and enjoyed the hilarious cameo by Keanu Reeves playing a fictional jerk of himself.

"So what did you think?" Cindy asked Jonathan as the end credits rolled.

"It was okay," he admitted. "I wouldn't have waited sixteen years to go after the woman I love though."

Cindy was about to ask him how long they have known each other but bit her tongue.
