How do you get to the party?

Roll in with Ethan and Jordan (Sigma Phi)

Chapter 48 by Amagine

After getting ready, you begin a trek that features a long stairway down to the quad, then another long stairway down to the parking lot. There, just as you've been told, is a plain black sedan. You fall into the backseat behind Ethan and Jordan, and it creates an odd effect. They are looking out the windshield, only looking back at you when they consciously decide to.

You expected Brandon to be in the car with you. Then you remember that he has his own ride and he probably wanted to show up on his own, just for the 'coolness' factor. Once Jordan starts driving, Ethan looks back at you, with a smile. "So how's campus life, pledge? Your next task will be soon."

"Good, I guess," you say. Then, after thinking: "You know, I haven't run into any other Sigma Phi brothers, lately. Just you two."

Jordan scoffs at this, and says, "Yeah, we're a small frat. It's in the name. Don't worry too much about it, there should be some more people there. And, you know. My girlfriend."

There's a weird tone in his voice as he says it. Almost...resentful? You think you spot a frown on Ethan's face, toward Jordan, as you go under a streetlight. But then it's gone.

"You know, Jordan, she was obviously going to be there," Ethan says. "Why would she miss it?"

"Yeah," there's a shrug from the driver's side. "Just figured I could have some actual freedom here, you know? Hey pledge, can you keep her company?"

Company? You ask: "What does that mean?"

"I don't know," Jordan says. "Hang out with her. Have some fun. I don't need her attached to my hip. I mean, I see her every day, right? And this is a celebration!"

Ethan doesn't turn his head again, his eyes are totally forward on the road.

"She's cute and all, too, and popular. The more time you spend with her, the more people will look at you like you've got something special about you, right?" Jordan says. "Works for me."

"...Right," you say, glancing at Ethan looking straight ahead, again. "But, like...she's your girlfriend?"

"When'd I say she wasn't?" Jordan asks.

You say. "I never said you didn't. I'm just saying...you think I'll get some kind of...I don't know, influence by being around a cute girl? But that's your cute girl. It just seems kind of..."

There's a silence that stretches long in the car. Ethan and Jordan are both looking straight ahead. The manor is appearing in the windshield. You can't help but be distracted by its grandiosity. It's crazy to think that Delta Gamma can own this multi-storey behemoth.

You finish. "...It's a little weird."

"How about this?" Jordan smirks back at you, as he backs into a spot at the curb. "It's your next unofficial pledge challenge, okay? Hang out with Taylor, for me. Just keep her busy while I do other shit. Alright?"

You take a deep breath. You don't generally get nervous about things, and he's smiling with a genuine ease.

So why do you feel this tension?

"Anyway, out of the car," Jordan says, with a smile. "I just got a text and we've got some more Sigma Phi boys to pick up. We might have to do some back and forth, actually. You cool with that, Ethan?"

"Yeah," Ethan says, quiet. "Sure."

And then, before you can ponder what this conversation truly meant, you're out of the car, and Jordan is pulling away.

You turn toward the house, and walk up the walkway to the lawn. Keep Taylor occupied. Right. Shouldn't be hard.

Especially since, the moment you knock on the door, the person who comes to greet you is...
