Chapter 9 by JackKinnoph JackKinnoph

What Should She Do Next?

Ride Up and Confront Her

Tex had ridden into this ravine to apprehend a criminal, and sure as the badge on her coat read “Sheriff,” she would see this through! Driving the mild carriage horse to its limit, she steered her right to the cliff path. The winding cliffs had handled the combined weight and girth of Roxxie and Butterscotch, so Tex’s mare had plenty of space.

What Roxxie didn’t have on her ascent was a portly sniper trying to knock her down. The vagabond pulled her own pistol, and began hailing fire on the sheriff. Texas lowered herself, holding her stetson tight to her head, as the horse sprinted further, having as strong an aversion to becoming swiss cheese as her rider. “C’mon, girl! Keep going! You’re doing great!”

Rocks began to crumble beneath their feet as the shots rang out. Thankfully the two were out of the landslide zone. But a well placed bullet could send them tumbling back down, dead or alive.

Even on an untrained horse, though, Texas pressed onward. Her quarry slowed noticeably as the cliffways narrowed, the roo and her mighty mount’s sizes working against them for once. A poorly placed step sent some rocks cascading down the cliff, nearly taking Butterscotch and Roxxie with it.

With a confident smile, Tex finally crested the cliff, meeting Roxxie on equal footing. Roxxie was dangerous, but her aim had nothing on Sheriff Texas Stanton! “Well, Roxxie? Need me to stand still? Maybe wear a target on my head?”

Roxxie pointed her gun, and a click sounded. With a grunt, she slapped it back into its holster. “Was always better at close quarters myself. A tiny thing like you wouldn’t know anything about that.”

“No amount of distance can stop me from bringin ya in. Fist or firearm, yer goin down, Roxxie,” Tex spat, ready to bring the roo in, once and for all.

Out here on the cliff, there was nowhere to run. Her only advantage was that their arena was too narrow for the goon and her equine partner in crime to approach her at once. Tex may have the advantage up here. Now all she had to do was plan carefully.

What’s the Best Tactic for Bringing Down a Bandit?
