Returning Home

Walt awoke. It was still dark outside but he felt good. Actually rested. He looked at the unfamiliar ceiling and turned his head.

Gwens cute sleeping face greeted him. His heart skipped. He stayed still and watched her sleep. In her sleep she resembled his wife less... infact in her sleep this Gwen revealed herself. She had a funny little light snore that was actually cute and endearing. A small scar on her forehead near her hairline that was hardly noticeable from some past childhood misadventure. In her sleep her face relaxed from it's usual intensity and became somehow softer and even lovelier. She was a vision.

Walt smiled. They'd stayed up talking about all kinds of things. Music (Gwen kind of liked pop and Walt, who had very diverse and eclectic tastes, did not). Books (They both enjoyed reading and were mystery fans). Favorite subjects (They both loved the sciences, math, history and literature). Odd quirks (Gwen did not like squirrels for the longest time. Walt disliked white bread.) Favorite colors (Gwen really liked the color red while Walt was into green). They both shared a number of interests like science fiction and tabletop games she'd played with Peter and Harry.

He sighed and slowly slid away. He had a hard on that could break adamantium right now. She was extremely desirable... but it was more than that. He was getting attached... and so was she. He wasn't completely unaware. They'd spent so much time together everyday. Talking, hanging out, going on adventures. They'd become friends and comfortable. Walt rubbed his face and stood. He wrote her a note saying he'd be back shortly just incase she woke up. And he would... but not until he went home for a little while. He missed his family. He gently tucked her in and brushed her hair before he kissed her cheek and left out the window.

Gwen touched her cheek and wiped away a tear. "Dummy," she said and went back to sleep.

Dave looked at Walt and Walt sighed nodding and patting his shoulder. "Sorry. I'm as stubborn as a mule only I got less sense. I got a little rest but I'm going home. Thanks for telling me to knock it off. I'll try to better. You're a damn good friend."

Dave smiled. "You better believe it! Go home Walter. I'll see you tomorrow?"

Walt nodded and walked away. "Yup. Soon as I can get away!" He was already calling the fastest available 3S transport and asking the girls if he needed to pick up anything. He was going home after stopping by the base.

Dave chuckled.

Walt had dropped off the Mk2 gear and suit for repairs and his test footage and results. One of the robotic octopi arms had ceased functionality, some of the armor plating bits had been pinchy and uncomfortable too and he'd had to jury rig some field repairs to the harness itself and the utility belt but they'd collected a lot of test data. He'd put the thing through the wringer. Otto had some ideas about a different plating they could use and and Lucious would try to adjust the belt to be a little more modular while Norman adjusted the suit. The mask, suit and harness worked great overall though considering it hadn't been designed for that long a field test and they condidered the Mk2 a success overall. Pete, Tony and Hal had finished up their additions as well. Walt shook his head smiling looking at it. He would grab the mk5 tomorrow.

Walt rushed to get home. He kept having to remind himself that it had only been "one day". One long day! But Dave was right. They could drop him back in right where he'd left off.

He pulled up at home smiling. And as he got out it didn't take long for the first one to greet him as Zwei came running! Walt laughed and caught him picking him. "Hiya, buddy! I missed you!"

Zwei licked his face. He was happy to see him too!

Walt grinned and set him back down. He wanted to head in but-

"Hey Walt!" Sasha yelled waving. She saw Walt turn her way and wave start running her direction. "Whoa! Where's the fire big guy- Aaahhh!"

Walt swept Sasha up in a hug and spun her around and around before setting her down and kissing her check.

Sasha punched his shoulder. "W-W-What's gotten into you?!"

Walt laughed letting go and holding up his hands grinning. "Sorry! Just great to see you! I missed you, Sasha."

Sasha blushed but peered at him and narrowed her eyes before pointing. "Have you been drinking?"

Walt chuckled. "Nope but that's a damn good idea!" He pulled out his flask and took a belt passing it to her. "I'll explain later. Have I missed dinner?"

Sasha had already taken a good long drink and finished with an, "Aaah! Whooo! That's good! Nope but I was hoping you could teach a few of us some of the power tools before then?" She took his arm and lead the way. "See we made a map of the damage spots from the storm and like we previously discussed I..."

"Walt's home!"

Everyone cheered and clapped at Penny's announcement. Yunyun blinked as they all got even more excited. "Is it always like this when he returns home everyday?"

Ilulu laughed as they made little decorations. Raven said, "Yes and no. Everyone is always happy to see him come home but he's had a long day so they're trying to make it special for him and them."

Yunyun thought then nodded. "Oh, right. He's been gone all day! He's semi-retired. He probably only works part-time I guess?"

Blake shook her head. "He calls it "semi-retired" but he's always working. Even at home and on days off. No, because of time stuff it was a long day for us but for Walt it's been close to a month."

Yunyun blinked. "He worked that much in a day?... wow! Is that... normal?"

"No," said Glynda pushing up her glasses. "And from what I understand it can be particularly stressful not to mention unhealthy."

Willow nodded. "That's right which is why everyone is trying to make it a joyful homecoming for them. He needs to be able to relax and unwind after working so hard. Especially if he's going to keep doing it for awhile. He might be... pent up." She blushed. "If the others haven't taken care of that."
