Return to the main hall.
Leaving the library behind, you made your way towards the entrance hall.
The house had grown noticeably livelier during the past hour. Guests wandered between the drawing room and the parlour, while servants moved quietly amongst them, ensuring every detail was in readiness before dinner.
As you reached the foot of the grand staircase, you stepped aside to allow a small group to pass.
Leading them was Lord Ashcombe himself.
The master of Kingsmere Hall carried himself with the effortless confidence of a man long accustomed to welcoming guests beneath his roof. Beside him walked the young lady in the blue dress you had noticed earlier that afternoon.
"...my daughter, Charlotte," Lord Ashcombe was saying as he addressed an elderly couple. "She has inherited her mother's fondness for the gardens."
The young woman offered the guests a gracious smile before her eyes briefly met yours.
Recognition flickered across her face.
"I believe we've crossed paths already," she said kindly.
You inclined your head.
"Only briefly, my lady."
"And you arrived with Sir Edward Harrington, did you not?"
"I did."
"I hope Kingsmere Hall has made a favourable first impression."
"It has, my lady."
"I'm delighted to hear it."
Before either of you could say more, Lord Ashcombe turned back towards his daughter.
"Charlotte."
"Yes, Father?"
"The Pembrokes have just arrived."
"Of course."
She offered you one last courteous smile.
"I hope you enjoy your stay, Mr. Thomas."
"And I hope you enjoy your guests, my lady."
A faint smile touched her lips.
"I shall certainly do my best."
With that, she rejoined her father and accompanied the remaining guests towards the drawing room.
You watched them disappear around the corner before continuing on your own way.
Though your exchange had lasted less than a minute, it had confirmed what first impressions often struggled to reveal.
Lady Charlotte Ashcombe possessed a kindness that seemed every bit as genuine as her smile.
