Chapter 5 by perv-senpai perv-senpai

Restore order

The Queen sat on her throne, sulking but silent. Her soldiers scrambled to the perimeter, leaving the center of the garden to me.

I turned my attention to the corrupted rosebushes. The black slime wasn't just dripping anymore; it was coalescing. The puddles on the grass began to bubble and rise, forming sleek, humanoid shapes with jagged antennae.

Shadows. But these were different. They were infused with the madness of the world. They twitched and stretched, their limbs elongating like taffy before snapping back.

"They're adapting to the environment," Alice noted, standing safely behind me but refusing to look away. "They are mimicking the fluid nature of Wonderland."

"Fluidity doesn't matter if you freeze the source," I said.

I summoned The Solar Zenith.

"Alice, stay back. If any get close, don't run. Just call me."

"I trust you," she said simply.

I launched myself into the fray.

This fight wasn't about brute ****; it was about precision. The Heartless moved erratically, popping in and out of existence, appearing out of thin air above me and dropping down.

I pivoted, swinging the Keyblade in tight, controlled arcs. I didn't chase their chaotic movements. I let them come to me. I was the center of the storm.

A Shadow lunged, stretching its claws into long needles. I sidestepped calmly, bringing the blade down on its extended arm, severing the darkness before delivering a thrust to its core.

Blizzard.

I cast the spell, but not as a projectile. I coated the ground around me in a layer of absolute zero. The black ink on the grass froze instantly. The fluidity of the Heartless was their strength, so I took it away. Frozen, they were brittle. Shatterable.

I moved through the garden like a reaper. Slash. Crunch. Shatter. The frozen Heartless broke apart into harmless dark shards that evaporated in the sunlight.

Within minutes, the garden was silent. The roses were still half-painted, but they were no longer bleeding. The oppressive feeling of distortion lifted, replaced by the normal, slightly headache-inducing nonsense of the world.

I dismissed my Keyblade and turned back to the podium.

The Queen was staring at me. Her mouth was a thin line. She looked at the clean garden, then at her useless soldiers, and finally at me. She realized that her screaming had achieved nothing, while my silence had fixed everything.

"The garden is clear," I announced, my voice echoing off the hedge walls.

The Queen stood up. She smoothed her massive dress. She looked smaller now, less like a tyrant and more like a manager who had been caught incompetent by corporate.

"You... cleared the pests," she grumbled, unable to bring herself to say 'thank you'. "I suppose... I suppose I shall rescind the execution order. For now."

"You'll do more than that," I said, walking to the base of the podium. I looked up at her with cold authority. "You're going to keep this world stable. No more impossible demands. No more chaos for the sake of chaos. If I have to come back because you let the darkness in again..."

I let the sentence hang. The Queen swallowed hard. She nodded, a jerky, stiff motion. She was cowed. Not attracted, not charmed, just thoroughly beaten by a superior ****.

"Understood," she squeaked. Then, regaining a shred of her bluster: "Well! Court dismissed! Everyone back to... whatever you were doing!"

The Card Soldiers scattered, relieved to be out of the line of fire. The King gave me a covert thumbs-up before scurrying after his wife.

I was left alone in the courtyard with Alice.

She was leaning against a white rosebush, watching the retreat of the court with a thoughtful expression. She looked at me, her blue eyes bright with admiration.

"You tamed her," Alice said, walking over. "I didn't think it was possible. She's a **** of nature."

"She's a bully," I corrected. "Bullies shrink when you stand your ground."

Alice stopped in front of me. She reached out and brushed a speck of ice from my coat.

"You make it look so simple," she whispered. "Solving the impossible."

"It usually is simple, Alice. People just overcomplicate things."

"I..." She hesitated, looking down at her shoes, then back up at me through her lashes. The intellectual curiosity was shifting into something more personal. "The Queen has retreated to her castle. The trial is over. But... I find myself uninterested in going back to chasing rabbits."

She took a step closer.

"You said you needed to inspect the rest of the area? There is... a quiet spot. At the tea party garden. It's usually free this time of day. The Mad Hatter is asleep."

I looked at her. She was offering me an invitation. A private audience.

"Lead the way, Alice," I said, offering her my arm.

She took it. Her hand was small and warm on my forearm. She squeezed gently, grounding herself against me.

"This way, Master Ray," she said softly. "Before the Cheshire Cat decides to appear and ruin the moment."

We walked out of the Queen's domain, leaving the silly politics of cards and crowns behind, heading toward the secluded madness of the tea garden.
