Restless

Evelyn spent the rest of the night trying to compose herself. Spencer's rejection had thrown her completely off balance. Was she Spencer still not ready to pursue a relationship? Or was the mess of raggy hair and baggy eyes that stared her down in the mirror as terrible as she thought it was? The thoughts wrestle in her mind all night until she drowned them out with a few glasses of whiskey.

She woke up to a thumping headache, thankful she had the day off. After a shower, she made herself a strong coffee before checking her phone. It tells her that she had slept into the afternoon and that Spencer had texted her.

'Hey, I just wanted to say that you shouldn't feel bad about yesterday. It just took me by surprise. You're an amazing woman Evelyn and you should be proud of yourself.'

'Thanks Spencer. I guess it was a bit spur of the moment'

'It did take me by surprise'

Evelyn stared at her phone, wondering what to text next. After a few minutes of gawking, she decided she didn't want to deal with it, not with a pounding headache. The fact was that Spencer wasn't interested, and that was that. Nothing she could say would separate Spencer from his departed wife.

She had no way of knowing that Spencer himself wrestled with the idea of being with another woman. He did like Evelyn, but he wasn't sure he loved her. Then again, that's how things started with Kirsten. He knew that his wife would want him to be happy, but he doubted any woman could fill the hole that had been left. As he went to sleep, he realized he'd have to come face to face with Evelyn again when he dropped Amy off at school on Tuesday. The thought kept him up for the most of the night.
