Chapter 34 by Mngwas Mngwas

What Does Sarah Choose?

Resolve to Dig Deeper, Albeit Cautiously

Knowledge was the key to any battle and though it sent a shiver down her spine, Sarah felt a stability in the goal of attaining it. Doyle was mixed up in something much greater than himself or the school. Even if it meant taking on the role of an impartial observer or simply playing along with Martin’s request, there was no turning back now. Given the strangers rhetoric, an arcane game was unfolding, and she wasn’t even sure if his visit constituted an opening move. The majority of Sarah’s own intuition was like a curious child prodding at the household cat and though the growling of her common sense foretold a painful lesson, it couldn’t help but try its luck.

The next few minutes were a silent war between the thought of just leaving this all behind and having Dale call the emergency line and blatantly buying into the **** of power that Martin had so freely encouraged. It wouldn’t be hard to corner Doyle and simply coax out what she needed to know. If he truly was at the center of the coming storm, it was clear the repercussions would reverberate much farther than just himself. It was paradoxical to say the least, that she felt more at home justifying her actions out of some self-interested base and yet she knew she’d be lying to herself if it was altruism that drove her over to her laptop to compose the requisite emails. She wondered if getting in contact with Martin again was the right play, but she needed someone who could help her stay in the loop. What the school knew, she needed to know. Martin was right, and she silently thanked him for explicitly stating his concern that they were simply pieces to be moved. That something was wrong. If she could piece together the details and do some digging of her own, it would at least give her what she wanted. What started as a pattering, picnic ruining shower was growing now, as though the strangers visit had incited it into the makings of a real storm. She wondered if there was a poetry to such a visit on such a day and though that seemed an unattainable answer, she resolved that this was the last time the truth would remain out of reach.
