Ren volunteers to get spiked

"I'll do it."

Leone had explained the gist of hemalurgy as he called it. It was a little gross, someone had died to make this bit of metal, but not using it would be wasteful too. Plus she couldn't resist the urge to unlock something more within herself.

It hurt.

Not like an injury, but like loss. Leone had driven the spike between her breasts as indicated by the diagram she'd stolen for him. She didn't feel it in her lungs or even her heart, it was more similar to the sadness she'd felt at her mother's passing a few years ago or a day when the mists feel more suffocating than usual. Ren was also sweating more than usual, but that felt practically normal compared to the piece of metal piercing her flesh.

"Try burning this." Leone handed her a vial of all the metals (well the useful ones that were easier to get) and she gulped it down. She felt a new warmth in her that she hadn't had before and burned it. The room erupted into bright light and vivid colors. She could suddenly hear people on the street outside speaking clearly, she could even smell their baked goods and other foods as they walked home from the market.

"I'm burning tin!" she said "I'm a tineye!" Leone smiled and nodded at her joy as Ren marveled at her newfound senses. She dismissed her metals and things felt duller again. "This is amazing. Imagine what we could do with these abilities."

Leone smiled at her. "An entire world of opportunities is available to us Ren."
