Chapter 2 by GlaDOS GlaDOS

Respond to his baiting?

Reluctantly ask for help

Kira's fingers hovered over the controls as another warning light began to flash. The pressure behind her eyes was building already, and they were barely a few hours into what would be a months-long journey. Pride warred with practicality as the environmental readings continued to shift into uncomfortable ranges.

"Fine," she bit out, turning her chair slightly. "Show me how to stabilize the system."

His mouth curved into what might have been a smile on a human face. On his scaled features, it looked predatory. "Third panel from the left, the amber control cluster," he instructed. "You'll need to authorize the maintenance cycle and then set the atmospheric balance to match your physiology."

She followed his directions, noting how the controls responded differently than standard models. The script was familiar enough, but the system architecture was completely alien. As she activated the sequence, the air already began to feel less oppressive.

"The manufacturers designed these vessels with specific requirements," he explained, watching her work. "The environmental systems actually adapt to the primary operator over time. Right now, it's trying to maintain settings for my species rather than yours."

The warning indicators faded as the cycle completed, but her victory felt hollow.

"Why do you know so much about these ships?" she asked, unable to keep suspicion from her voice.

"I told you. I coordinated transportation." His tone remained mild, reasonable. "My clients valued comfort and efficiency. I made it my business to understand what I was providing."

She turned back to the console, unwilling to see the amusement in those alien eyes. The headache was receding, but having to rely on him for something so basic left a bitter taste in her mouth.

"The pain in your side is getting worse," he observed. "The medical system on board could help with that. It's quite advanced."

Kat's hand unconsciously moved to cover the bite wound. "I'm fine."

"Of course." There was that note of amusement again. "Though you might want to have it properly treated before the venom fully enters your system. Just a suggestion."

Follow his advice, get some rest, or try to learn more about the ship?
