Rejection hurts

Kevin went to school and Maria gave him his first Friday off. Grace had the afternoon off too and they were going on a date that evening. At home, Sue was on a tear. Unbeknownst to Kevin, she had been difficult towards Michelle and Penny all day. The previous night, Sue had called Amber and asked her out over the weekend on a first date She wanted a real date, not a thing where they are both at the same event with others, but she wanted to visibly be a couple in public. Amber had rejected her and this had soured Sue's mood all day on Friday. The worst part was Anita had been dismissive of Amber and Sue sensed she didn't approve and now Sue had to somewhat agree with here mother.

Penny was preparing dinner and Sue and Kennedy were at the kitchen table that Sue was supposed to be setting. Kevin had gotten ready for his date and was reading in the living room, where aunt Anita was also finishing some work.

Sue: Penny, you shouldn't put so much butter in that.

Penny: It's what I usually use and also what is in mom's recipe.

Sue: If you keep feeding us that, we are going to grow up to have big ugly shoulders likes mom. You already have them a little.

Penny: Do not. Mom looks great and I have a different build because I do sports instead of whatever you do all day.

Sue: Sports, puh. Look like you're a line backer and you only do track and swim. Are you dating Harvey or trying to join the team?

Penny thought these were dumb things to say but could tell by Sue's tone she was trying to get a rise. Unfortunately, Penny recognized the trap just before jumping in.

Penny: Do you have something to say? And at least I have a boyfriend instead of chasing the sluttiest girl in town who is already seeing someone else.

Sue: No she isn't.

Sue had gotten up and gave Penny a shove. It caught Penny by surprise, but she recovered quick and slapped Sue back into a small table/cabinet piece and a cup fell out and broke on the floor. Anita seemed to teleport into the kitchen, she moved so fast.
