You sat on the edge of the bed in just a towel, phone in your hand, the steam from the shower still clinging to your skin.
For a long time you just stared at Emma’s last messages.
Then you started typing.
You:
“I can’t do it.
I never cheated on you. I loved you more than anything. But I won’t destroy what’s left of myself just to stay near you while you belong to someone else.
Goodbye, Emma.
I hope you find whatever it is you’re looking for.”
You hit send before you could second-guess yourself.
Then you blocked her number.
Blocked your father.
Blocked your mother.
Blocked Lily.
Blocked the entire family group chat.
You packed the few things you had, checked out of the hotel, got into your car, and drove.
You didn’t look back.
Years later
The life you built was quiet and good.
You moved to another state. Started over with almost nothing. Worked hard. Healed slowly.
Eventually you met someone kind. Someone who looked at you like you mattered. You married her on a warm afternoon with only a handful of close friends present. No drama. No lies. No shadows from the past.
Three children came in the years that followed — two boys and a girl. Loud, healthy, and full of life. You coached little league. You sat through school plays. You held your wife’s hand on the couch after the kids finally went to sleep.
Sometimes, late at night, an old memory would surface — a flash of Emma’s face, the sound of your father’s voice, the taste of humiliation. But it never stayed long. Those people belonged to a life you had walked away from.
You never contacted them again.
They never found you.
And for the first time in a very long time… you were simply happy.
The end.
