Recap of the scene

Chapter 12 by Spectatorn

Dan lay back against the headboard, both arms extended, a girl tucked under each. His hands found their way to the nearest breast on each side with the automatic ease of a man reaching for familiar objects — Tiffany's left, Candy's right — and began the slow, proprietary kneading that had become as natural to him as breathing.

"Right," he said, in his post-scene assessment voice. "Let's talk about what worked."

Both girls looked up at him attentively.

"Tiffany." He squeezed her breast once, punctuating. "The slutty best friend. You were born for that role. I want you to understand that — there was not a single moment where I didn't believe completely that your character had no moral framework whatsoever regarding her best friend's husband." He paused. "That's a compliment."

Tiffany beamed. "I really felt like I understood her."

"You inhabited her," Dan confirmed. "Now — dialog. That's your development area. In the next take, your character needs to vocalise." He looked at her. "Phrases like — yes, fuck me with that big fat cock. Or—" he said it with the same neutral tone he might use to discuss blocking, "I'm such a dumb fucking gullible whore. That kind of declaration. It tells the audience exactly who your character is. Don't make them guess."

Tiffany nodded seriously, committing both phrases to memory. "I can absolutely do that. I think I was so focused on the physical commitment that I neglected the verbal."

"Common first-take mistake," Dan said generously.

He turned to Candy. His hand moved on her breast, slow and warm. She looked up at him with those catastrophically trusting blue eyes, her freckles visible even in the dim room.

"Candy," he said. "The loving wife discovering her own desire — you did something I genuinely didn't expect in a first session. You found the emotional truth underneath the physical scene. That jealousy that became hunger. That was real acting."

Candy's whole face went warm. "I just like, felt her? Does that make sense? Like she was just already inside me?"

"That's exactly what it means to have natural talent," Dan said.

She pressed her face into his chest briefly, overwhelmed.

"Your dialog work," he continued, his thumb moving in a slow circle, "needs to reflect her interiority. Her secret desires. When you're with Tiffany's character, the audience needs to hear the longing out loud." He held her gaze. "Things like — I've always wanted to lick these huge tits. Or—" same neutral tone, "lick this pussy you big titted slut. That's how her repressed feelings come out in the heat of the scene. Through language."

Candy mouthed the phrases slightly, quietly, the way a student mouths new vocabulary.

"Okay," she said. "Yeah. I can feel how that serves the character."

"First take of a scene that complex," Dan said, looking between them both, "you both performed excellently. I want that on record." He squeezed both breasts simultaneously, gently, the way another man might give an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "I'm proud of the work in this room today."

Tiffany made a small, happy sound. Candy turned her face up and kissed Dan's jaw softly, instinctively, the way she'd seen Tiffany do it.

Dan accepted this without comment, like a man used to tribute.

"Lunch," he said. "Both of you. Go together. Take your time, eat properly." He looked between them. "And talk. Not about anything in particular — just talk. About each other. About what you noticed during the scene. What impressed you. What surprised you." He let that land. "The chemistry between scene partners is built in the ordinary moments, not just the performing ones. The audience feels whether two people actually know each other."

"That makes so much sense," Candy said.

"Go on then." He moved to stand, the girls untangling from his sides in a warm, unhurried shift of limbs and weight. He pulled his tracksuit bottoms on. "Tiffany. Stay a moment."

Candy gathered herself — located her g-string on the floor, her skirt, the pink boob tube — and dressed with the easy, unselfconscious efficiency of someone for whom nudity had already become unremarkable in this room. She slung her bag over one shoulder.

"I'll wait outside?" she said.

"Two minutes," Dan said.

Candy padded down the hallway, and they heard the front door open and the quiet sounds of the landing.

Dan turned to Tiffany, who had pulled her white crop top back on over her extraordinary chest and was stepping into her shorts. She looked up.

"I've got someone for you this afternoon," Dan said.

Her face did what it always did — the opening, the brightness, the lean forward.

"He's a friend of mine," Dan said. "Books a lot of casting. Senior level — the kind of man who can accelerate a career significantly." He let her absorb this. "He's heard about you. I've been telling him about this new young actress I've been developing, and he needs to see the performance for himself before he commits his name to anything." Dan held her gaze steadily. "So this afternoon you go to his place and you do a scene with him. Let him assess you properly. Full commitment — everything you've got."

Tiffany's eyes were shining.

"Dan," she said, "that's — I can't believe how fast this is all moving. Like, two weeks ago—"

"I know," he said.

"I'm going to be brilliant for him," she said, with the absolute, unclouded certainty of someone who doesn't know what they're walking into and therefore isn't afraid of any of it. "He won't be disappointed. I promise."

"He won't," Dan agreed, thinking of the figure his friend had transferred that morning. "I know that."

He took the address from his phone, wrote it on the back of a receipt, handed it over. "Two o'clock. Dress well."

She folded the receipt carefully and tucked it into her bag.

Then Dan looked at Candy's retreating presence down the hallway, and back at Tiffany.

"Candy," he said. "She comes back after lunch. Two, two-thirty. We'll run more scenes." His voice was level. "She needs more time building experience before I bring other actors in to work with her. She's not ready for that yet." He paused. "I want to make sure the foundation is solid."

Tiffany nodded. "She's amazing though, isn't she? Like, for the first few days?"

"Remarkable," Dan said, and meant it in the way he meant most things — accurately, and entirely for his own reasons.

He walked them both to the door.

Candy was on the landing, bag on her shoulder, bouncing very slightly on her heels in the way of someone for whom standing still was a loosely observed guideline. She looked up when the door opened.

Dan looked at Tiffany.

He took her face in his hands and kissed her — slow, thorough, his tongue in her mouth, his hands sliding down to her waist and pulling her in. She kissed back with the warm, automatic depth of something entirely habitual now. His hands found her ass. Held it.

When he released her she was flushed and smiling.

"Good girl," he said. "Go be brilliant."

Then he looked at Candy.

She stepped forward, tilting her face up — she had watched Tiffany and made her calculation in real time, same as she always did, and arrived at the same conclusion she always arrived at — and Dan kissed her too. Just as long. Just as deep. His hand in her blonde hair, his other hand at the small of her back, pulling her extraordinary chest against him.

Candy made a small, soft sound into the kiss and then kissed him back properly, her hands curling into his t-shirt.

When he let her go she looked up at him with dazed, happy eyes.

"Come back after lunch," he said.

"I'll be so fast," she said.

He watched them go down the stairs together — Tiffany tucking the receipt into her bag, Candy already leaning in to say something that made Tiffany laugh, their voices bright in the stairwell, their footsteps clattering away.

The door at the bottom swung shut.

Dan leaned in his doorframe in his dirty tracksuit bottoms and thought about two o'clock, and the client's money already sitting in his account, and Candy coming back, and the calls he needed to make once her foundation was properly established.

He went inside to make a coffee.

Life, Dan thought, lighting the first cigarette of the afternoon, was a matter of knowing what you had and knowing what to do with it.

He had a great deal.

He knew exactly what to do with all of it.
