Chapter 26 by RegressionSchool

What will Rebecca decide?

Rebecca Chooses Lilly

Rebecca glanced at the empty second crib and then at Nanny Malory. The thought of spending another night alone, with only the quiet hum of the room to keep her company, made her stomach churn. Finally, she took a deep breath and said softly, “Maybe… Lilly?”

Nanny Malory’s face lit up with approval. “That’s a wonderful choice, Becky,” she said warmly. “I’ll go fetch her. You settle in for now.”

Rebecca nodded and climbed into her crib, the soft mattress crinkling under her as she adjusted her blanket. The room, bathed in its warm pink glow, felt oddly soothing, but her thoughts churned as she waited.

A few minutes later, Nanny Malory returned, guiding Lilly by the hand. Lilly’s cheeks were still flushed from her earlier embarrassment, and she clutched a stuffed bear tightly against her chest.

“Hi, Becky,” Lilly said shyly as she climbed into the second crib, her fresh diaper crinkling faintly as she moved. She sat down, her gaze darting nervously around the room.

Rebecca hesitated, unsure how to start, but the silence felt too heavy. “Are you… okay?” she asked softly, her voice tentative.

Lilly looked at her for a moment, then sighed. “I guess,” she admitted. “But… earlier…” She trailed off, her cheeks growing even redder.

Rebecca tilted her head. “What about earlier?”

Lilly fidgeted with the stuffed bear, her gaze fixed on its button eyes. “I only… I only went poopoo because I thought it would make them happy,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “Like, maybe I’d get praised more. But now… I just feel silly.”

Rebecca blinked, surprised by the admission. “You thought they’d praise you for that?”

Lilly nodded, her shoulders slumping. “I don’t know. I thought it was what I was supposed to do. Everyone keeps saying how important it is to use our diapers, so I just… I wanted to do it right. But now I just feel gross.”

Rebecca wasn’t sure how to respond at first. She shifted under her blanket, the crinkle of her own diaper loud in the quiet room. “I get it,” she said finally. “I mean, I didn’t do that, but… I get wanting to do what they want.”

Lilly glanced at her, her eyes softening. “Yeah,” she murmured. “I just… I don’t know if I even want to be here. But I failed the BAM. And my life before…” She trailed off, her gaze distant as she hugged the bear tighter.

Rebecca felt a flicker of understanding. “I get that too,” she said quietly. “I didn’t think I’d end up here either. But I guess… I don’t know. Maybe it’s not so bad.”

Lilly looked at her again, this time with a faint smile. “You think so?”

Rebecca shrugged, pulling her blanket up to her chin. “I mean, it’s weird. And embarrassing. But… it’s not as scary as out there, right?”

Lilly nodded slowly. “I guess. Out there, every little mistake felt huge. At least here… I don’t know. It’s okay to mess up.”

The two girls sat quietly for a moment, the room filled with the soft hum of the nightlight.

“What was your life like before?” Lilly asked suddenly, her voice hesitant.

Rebecca thought for a moment, then said softly, “Busy. And stressful. I was always trying to keep up with everything, and it felt like no matter what I did, I was always behind. Failing the BAM… it was humiliating, but… maybe it was a relief too.”

Lilly nodded, her gaze thoughtful. “Same. I was so nervous all the time. I thought I could fix everything, but… I couldn’t.”

They fell into a comfortable silence, the weight of their shared vulnerabilities easing the tension between them. Eventually, Rebecca yawned, her eyes growing heavy. She glanced at Lilly, who was already curling up under her blanket, her stuffed bear tucked securely against her chest.

As they drifted off, the pink glow of the room wrapped around them like a cocoon, their shared stories and quiet companionship making the strange space feel just a little less lonely.
