Rampert obeyed his master without hesitation. He rose to his feet fluidly and stood stock-still as Chance inspected him.
"Very good Rampert." Chance praised but did not take his eyes off Logan as he called to one of the technicians, "Tim, bring me a scalpel." There was a hiss of air as Tim rushed in to comply with Chance's order. But in his eagerness to please one of Zenith's highest ranking personnel Tim tripped and nearly impaled Chance with the sharp instrument. Tim's mistake only missed due to Logan rapidly changing into Fracture and leaping to grab the assistant by the wrist and smoothly pulling him down to the floor by applying pressure to the same shoulder with his other forearm.
The terrified tech only suffered a bruised chin, but what had truly shaken him was the fact that he hadn't even processed Logan moving until he hit the floor, and the power that Logan possessed. Tim felt as though his arm had been encased in cement, hell he may have even had a better chance of freeing his arm from that before getting free of this monster.
"Thank you Tim." Chance coolly remarked, seemingly un-bothered by the whole scenario. "Release him Rampert."
Logan did as commanded. Would always do as commanded. Never a stray thought entered his mind as he followed his master's orders. He stood still as Chance sliced the flesh from his forearm. He stood still as other personnel took his vitals and ran other tests. He did not know how long he stood, he also didn't care.
Chance also waited patiently, to see just how deep the programming had taken hold. After about 36 hours of additional surveillance, and confirmation that Logan had not moved an inch or changed posture, Chance approached the company's newest property.
"I have a task for you Rampert." Chance watched as Logan briefly closed his eyes in confirmation. "You are going to put on a demonstration for some of our benefactors. You will not answer any questions, and you will return to this room no later than 0200 this coming morning."
Logan blinked slowly.
"Follow me." Chance said as he turned around. He then led Logan through a labyrinth of tunnels to a hanger filled with an assortment of aircraft that all looked to be capable of vertical takeoff. Once inside, Logan was ushered into a small containment cell similar to the one he had spent the better part of a month inside of. The pre-recorded messages were there, as well as flashing lights that kept him alert and attentive.
After a few hours, the aircraft arrived at a non-descript area in the southwest United States. Sand and rock dominated the landscape with a few mountains in the distance. The sun had just begun to touch the horizon of the western sky, allowing for ample light before darkness fell. Chance had Logan released from his containment and ushered off the aircraft.
Logan stood patiently as the air around him heated up and dust flew as the same aircraft he arrived in took flight. His vacant gaze showed no change as he heard Chance over an ear piece that had been placed into the cartilage of his ears.
"Rampert, you are to locate a simulated downed pilot and return him to the rendezvous location provided." The ear pieces then emitted a light that formed a visor in front of Logan's eyes. He scanned the environment and saw his extraction zone highlighted in a soft blue outline. After verifying his final objective he kneeled down and placed all ten fingertips into the soft dirt of the desert. His form changed into Fracture as small tendrils buried deep and shot out wide. The individual threads sought organisms through temperature, carbon dioxide emission, and ambient heat. He ignored all the smaller creatures. After a minute he finally found a woman resting inside of a sleeping bag. He got up without a word and dashed towards the distant figure.
His arrival was silent and sudden. The woman he had been tasked with finding and retrieving was fast asleep. She yelped in surprise as Logan quickly raised her up and draped her across his shoulders. She had been well briefed on the circumstances of this exercise and did not struggle or scream beyond her initial shock. After a brief scan to gather his bearings, Logan once again sped off towards his goal.
"I anticipate the subject will arrive within the next minute, if not less." Chance answered the latest question from the group of politicians and other high ranking federal personnel. Normally he wouldn't play the part of salesman however, Logan's programming dictated that he be here to ensure that everything proceeded smoothly.
"Mr. McCallister, I do not believe it in our best interest to support a project of which your company has decided to divulge little, to no, information on how you acquired the means to create such a soldier."
"Madam Zajacowski, I am not authorized to discuss the process. I am only here to pique your interests in employing our services for the betterment of our country AND your own businesses."
Zajacowski huffed at Chance's response. Perfectly political without revealing any information and only promising potential gain. Any rebuttal she may have been considering was quickly eliminated as Logan seemingly appeared from nowhere to Chance's side before gently setting the female pilot on her feet.
"Search and rescue of a single person within a 10 mile radius completed in 19 minutes, 37 seconds." Chance announced to the small gathering. Their stunned silence at Logan's form only reinforced Chance's confidence in the situation he had found himself in. "Next demonstration will be stealth and infiltration."
Chance then showcased Logan's ability to turn nearly invisible, as well as assuming the identity of each person present, including voice mimicry and personal questions that only the person being copied could know. Logan passed each test with flying colors.
The gathered crowd only grew more unnerved and impressed as they watched Logan disarm and detain multiple armed guards, punch his arm through an armored humvee, and surviving a fragmentation grenade.
Soon after patching himself up, he followed Chance back onto the aircraft and into his containment. He listened to the voices and watched for the lights. He showed no signs as IVs were placed into his arms. Logan no longer ate, no longer slept, and was truly less of a man than he had ever been.
