Chapter 6
by moonblack
How do you fight the elf?
Push him in the pool
You take a quick look around but see no exits other than the door through which you entered the room. You could try to flee through it, but you will have to turn your back to the elf, and that seems like a very bad idea – he could have ranged weapons you have no seen yet, or he might know some spells... plus the door might turn out to be locked. You decide that fighting is your best chance.
The elf seems pretty confident in his victory. Whether that is because he is a skilled warrior, or because he is overconfident you don't know, but maybe you could use his confidence against him... You take a look at the pool and finalize your plan. Then you hold your sword with both hands and face towards the elf, trying to appear worried and even a little scared. It seems to work because his grin grows wider.
As soon as the elf reaches you he starts attacking you: First the right sword, then the left, then the right again followed by the left... The constant attacks leave you unable to counterattack as it takes all of your skill and concentration to dodge and parry the blows. If you were going to fight him normally you would be in big trouble right now – fortunately that is not what you have planned...
You pretend that he is overpowering you and start pulling back, as if to get away from him. Naturally he does not allow you to get away. Time seems to slow down as you fully focus your attention on dodging and parrying his attacks, and slowly you retreat while waiting for your chance.
As he keeps attacking you in vain the elf's grin gets replaced by a frown on annoyance. He is clearly not happy that it is taking him so long to defeat you, and his attacks grow more erratic as he focuses on speed instead of accuracy. This is exactly what you were hoping for. You keep retreating for a bit longer and then finally make your move. You duck under a careless swing of one sword, then move closer and kick him in the chest. The blow does no real damage, but it catches him by surprise and causes him to lose his balance for a few moments. Your opponent stumbles back and a bit to his left, and stops almost on the edge of the pool.
Once he has regained balance the elf takes a quick look at the pool to see how close he has gotten. That proves his biggest mistake, because as soon as he takes his eyes off of you, you rush forward and sweep his feet from under him, causing him to fall in the pool.
"Bitch!" He shouts right before he hits the surface of the water. As soon as he is fully submerged his body sinks like a stone, much faster than you would have expected.
For the first time you take a longer look at the pool and realize that it is much deeper than you thought – so deep, in fact, that you can't even see the bottom because the light does not reach that far. As you watch the elf sink helplessly you think you see a woman's face in the water, but as soon as you blink it is gone and you are not sure if you really saw it.
Once the elf's body has sunken to the point where you can no longer see him you relax and take a few deep breaths, confident that you have won. Then the sound of heavy footsteps attracts your attention.
You look in the direction of the footsteps and see that the wooden door through which you entered the room is open again. On the other side of the door, in the room where you fought the skeleton, is a large green-skinned ogre holding a heavy wooden club. He is looking directly at you, but does not try to enter the room.
Since you are in no immediate danger you take another look around the room. You discover that doors have appeared in the walls. One is made of wood, one is made of stone, another one is made of some metal, possibly iron or steel, and the last one is made of ice. You realize that if you want to leave the room you can go to the room with the ogre or you can try one of the new doors. You can also risk swimming in the pool, even though something might be living there, such as a water elemental or a water demon.
Which way do you go?
