The genetic reconstruction programme utilises the recent advances by Robotec in nanorobotry to excise, repair or replace cells in living subjects. The nanorobots operate at a microscopic level injected directly into the subject's system. Due to the physical and mental trauma experianced by subjects whilst the procedure is performed it is necessary to place subjects in an induced comatose state. The programme has developed life support pods for long term intensive genetic alterations. A nutrient biogel contained by the pod provides the building material for the nanorobots and the medium into which excised cells can be deposited. After successful Alpha testing clinical trials Vault Tec has been selected as a partner to move onto Beta testing more detailed and case specific applications of the technology.

Vault 73 situated in Boise will be funded by medical corporations. It will explore general medical applications, repairing injuries, eradication of cancers and inherited genetic disorders.

Vault 121 situated in Boston will be funded by a private cartel. It will explore the use of the technology in the field of gender reassignment.

The project overview is concise, however it does answer the question of how you were changed. It makes you shudder and feel nauseous to realise the pool of liquid you woke to find yourself laying in was in a large part liquified matter expelled from your body by miniature robots. At a rough estimation you would calculate that almost half your former bodymass was reduced into that greenish goo.
