Primer: Federation Borders and Boundaries

Since The Restoration, Federation space has been divided into four zones of governance with ever shifting boundaries between The Core, The Rim, The Border, and The Frontier. These zones determine the level of control that the central government possesses and the rights and responsibilities of the human citizens.

The Core worlds consist of the earliest colonies which were well established before the Homo Superior doctrine became the driving **** of human expansion. The Core worlds are the stable center consisting of the Alpherion System as well as Conquest, Victory, and ShinHonshu. These worlds are placed under the direct control of The Core Congress, an institution that mirrors the old parliament, and are governed using most of the same institutions that existed prior to The Glorious Restoration. The people of The Core take pride in their civic orientation and active participation in their government. Though in theory Core Worlders enjoy greater civil rights than their border world counterparts, the reality is that the divide between the rich and poor is vast with significant resources being funneled to a Circuses and Sluts approach to occupying the attention of the mob.

In accordance with the Treaty of Eden, when a star system has reached a certain population size and has established certain key pieces of space based infrastructure, that star system will be reclassified from being on The Border to being part of The Rim. Though individual planets, moons, stations, and habitats might be owned wholly by an individual or a corporation, the star system itself is regulated by The Federation Navy with the Courts of Admiralty holding jurisdiction over matters inter and intrastellar.

Beyond The Rim lies those stars ripe for the taking. Whole stellar systems waiting to be claimed. Those men and women who would be border lords have done just that. Those who dwell on The Border dwell at the fringe of civilized space where the power of the aristocracy is near absolute. Borderlanders are a people who live where Federation Navy are a novel surprise and a human being must be ready to protect their lives, livelihood, and loved ones from the ever present threat of wild xenos. Though border world status does come with significant autonomy, the tax and franchise structures of The Federation are such that lords are encouraged to develop their systems for Rim incorporation.

Then there is The Frontier. When in uncharted lands beyond the control of The Parliament in the Alpherion system, humans are expected to be The Law. Those who would make their fortunes expanding humanity’s knowledge and dominion are to abide by The Lex Chivalric, the commercial code and rules of engagement which is meant to guide the conduct and deportment of the adventuring lords who seek their fortunes braving the vast unknown, but know full well that in the savage darkness, people will make their own order out of anarchy.
