Seeing Red
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed it, but the sun’s going down,” Davy continued on, “and it’s half a day’s ride to where Red is living.”
“You know where she lives?”
“Word gets around, and she’s been the subject of quite a few rumours ever since she retired.” Davy explained.
“Like what?”
“Look, every once in a while word gets round that Red has either been made captain of some ship or other or has joined its crew, but they’ve always proved to be unfounded. And there’s the ones going round about why she retired, but I guess you’ve heard most of those?”
“I have, and pretty much all of them sound like so and so much bullshit.” Brenan gave Davy his verdict on the stories about what had happened to Red to make her leave her maritime career behind her.
“Yeah, sailors tend to talk a lot of crap,” Davy agreed, “but returning to Red, she’s living in a small, secluded house right on the beach.”
“Right, I’ll get a blanket and some food and camp outside tonight,” Brenan said, “I’m guessing that the wildlife on this island isn’t too dangerous?”
“No, you should be fine. Although if you went and got yourself killed, I’d be able to sell this beauty all over again.” Davy grinned at Brenan.
“I’m touched by your kindness.”
A short while later, Brenan rode out of town. Thanks to Davy, Brenan brought with him his weapons, a blanket, some food and a map of the island with the location of Red’s house marked out on it.
He travelled until just after midnight and then made camp for the night, allowing his horse to rest up and to graze the area around the small campsite while he got some sleep. Five years of working in shifts and standing guard aboard ships had had its effect on Brenan, and he awoke after four hours of sleep and had soon set off again after eating a nourishing but dull breakfast.
Seven or eight hours later, Brenan guessed that he would have to be close to Red’s house, and the area in which she lived had turned out to be a pretty sparsely populated area, more than two hours ride from the nearest port and with small farms and few modestly large plantations spread out along the narrow dirt road on which he was travelling. There were barely any people at all moving along the road besides him, and the few that he did meet were either farmers or fishermen.
As it turned out, Brenan had to turn off the main road to get to Red’s home, and he dismounted his horse and led it behind up the narrow path which threatened to be swallowed up by the tropical undergrowth, the fact that he was alone in the wilderness and approaching the abode of someone who had chosen to isolate herself causing him to keep a watchful eye on his surroundings as he travelled further and further away from the road.
It took thirty minutes of walking up the trail, but then Brenan could feel the smell of the sea fill his nostrils and began to hear the steady soar of the waves coming in.
Stopping for a moment to check that his gun and his sword were both ready in case he would need them, Brenan left the horse tied to a tree and began to move towards the small wooden house that he could now see, keeping an eye out for any sign of movement.
Davy had been right about the small house being practically placed on the beach as it stood just in line with the last palm trees before the ground turned into an open, sandy beach, and Brenan suspected that the low porch in front of the house was a great place from which to watch the sunset.
Suddenly, Brenan’s observation of the house was interrupted when a figure walked out onto the porch, and he instantly dropped down on his knees behind the crooked trunk of a palm tree to try and discern whether or not the figure on the porch was Red.
It was, and looking at her was enough to drive away Brenan’s fears that she would have grown fat or substantially more aged during the years that they’d been apart. As it were, Red barely looked a day older than when he had last seen her, with the tresses of her red hair spilling down onto her back and her curvy frame and large tits barely being contained by the thin, simple white dress that she had on. The sight of her incredible body and breathtakingly beautiful face was enough to remind Brenan of how hard it had been to resist the rewards which she had offered him time and time again those five years ago.
Watching the bottom of her dress flap against her toned legs as Red made her way out onto the beach without having spotted him; Brenan wondered whether or not he should make himself known straight away.
