Foreshadowing

You sit down next to Penny and Ashley, they both kiss you on the cheeks and Ashley puts a lunch box in front of you.

"Thanks Ashley, do you know where's Jessica?" She looks around before answering.

"Nope, I guess she's busy with her newspaper." You nod, you might be making conclusions too fast, you didn't do anything to piss her off... you think.

"John, I invited Kana at the Christmas party for you." Penny tells you.

"Oh right, huh which day is it again?" She gasps.

"Oh, come on! It's not hard to remember! Its this Thursday, you know? The 24th." You forgot, you're a little out of it since last Sunday.

"Right, sorry." You're apologetic.

"About the party... I don't have any dress..." Kana says. You're feeling a little embarrassed, the girls bought a dress with you.

"It's okay, let's go together tonight!" Penny comforts her, it seems she liked shopping, maybe she wants to dress up Kana herself.

"Sure, we'll meet after school." She smiles, she's starting to open up more and more, and that makes her look beautiful.

You spend a good time, but you're a little anxious with the absence of Jessica.

---Later---

You're done with class but you don't want to go home yet. You send a text to Ashley and you both meet at the school's entrance.

"Hey, you don't ask to spend time often." She teases you.

"Let's go somewhere today." You tell her.

"Where did you have in mind?" She asks.

"I don't know... Wanna see a movie? We'll go eat a burger afterwards."

"Sure, that's my kind of date." You leave, as you walk you're debating about which movie to watch.

"How about an horror movie? There are some good ones right now." You shiver at the thought, you dislike horror movies a lot.

"Yeah, maybe not... Don't you want to watch romance?" She studies your face in search of a joke.

"You're kidding right? The romance movies are always a waste of time."

"I don't know, isn't that what girls like?" She laughs.

"No, I mean, I can't speak for every girl, but I don't want to watch a slow, recycled relationship between one dimensional characters." You weren't expecting her to have such a strong opinion.

"Fine, do you have anything you want to watch? Apart from horror?" You don't want to stay stuck to her in fear for the whole movie.

"How about a detective movie then? This one looks good!" She says while showing you her phone.

"Alright that could be fun!"

You take your tickets and you watch intensely. You made a bet, the one who discovers the murderer first wins a free meal. the movie is quite standard at first, presenting characters, showing off the island where they will be stuck on. You start looking for potential suspects, characters that look weird or too normal.

The **** happens and you give your suspects.

"It's clearly the grandpa." you tell her.

"Nah, it's the journalist, he's thee only one that could have done it."

But instead of developing the way you expected, murders kept happening, the grandpa was second, the journalist was seventh. At some point, you wonder if anyone will survive.

It ends with the two last characters killing each other, and then just before the end, the grandpa gets up and grins.

"What? That's bullshit!" She says.

The movie responds to her by showing the murders a second time from the grandpa's point of view and it actually made sense, it shows all the hints he's been dropping and it ends with a teaser for a sequel.

You leave the room and you can see that Ashley is pissed off, she changed suspect many times during the movie and you won by simply making a random guess at the beginning.

"That's so random! How could we solve the murders ourselves? You just guessed randomly." You laugh.

"You know you're supposed to put the hints together right? Every good story puts a lot of foreshadowing everywhere, I'm just smarter than you."You flex your victory and she breaks into a laugh.

"Right, come here you dork, let's go." She brings you to a fast food and you start eating while talking about the movie you just saw, mostly about the hints and how they fit with the narrative.

You spend a great night and you go home quite late.
