Chapter 3 by mespot mespot

Do you know how I'm going to do it?

Why wait? Knock on the door.

I have the whole day, but why should I give them the day? It's time to go to work.

I think for a moment. Five or so in the morning. What could I say?

Well, that might work.

I pull up to the house and walk down the path to her door. White door. Immaculate, in fact. Ironic.

I knock, shattering the silence of the pre-morning.

No response. Maybe she thinks I'm a solicitor, trying to sell her junk, or a Mormon, trying to sell her salvation. I suppose I'm just the one who realizes that they're not mutually exclusive.

I knock again, this time harder. I wait a moment, then hear steps coming down the stairs. The door opens.

"Yes, what is it?" A sleepy girl peeks her head out.

Shit. That's not her. I forgot to check on her roommates.

Get it together, Ben, you're slipping.

"Hello, I'm Grant Endsworth with the EPA. We're checking on freon leaks in the T150 brand of air conditioner. Tell me, do you have Eide Air?"

She looks confused and sleepy. Opportune. "Um, I don't think so. That doesn't sound familiar. I'm sorry, but it's very early, could we do this-"

I cut her off. "You see, freon leaks are very dangerous. They've been leaked to cancer and tuberculosis. It'd be no trouble for me to come in and check."

I have no idea what a freon leak really does.

It seems to work, though. "Fine, but be quick, I want to get back to sleep."

"Of course, this will only take a moment." I step inside, and close the door behind me. Luckily, she hasn't noticed that I don't have a uniform. "Would you mind taking me to your air conditioner?"

She leads me around a corner to the left, and points at a door. "I think it's in there," she says. "Near the hot water heater."

I open the door walk inside confidently. I pull out a rag, pour chloroform all over it, and rub it on her hot water heater. I look at it, wearing a puzzled look, and gesture for her to come near. She stands next to me, and I move the rag near her face.

"Tell me, does this smell like chloroform to you?"

She starts to ask me something, but unfortunately, my hand was blocking it.

She struggles for a moment, then, she's out cold. Onto Lucy.

Up the stairs?
