Chapter 5

What now?
Come the Dragons!
Turning his attention fully at the book once more, Alan erases all of the rules that he just wrote. He looks back for a moment in time to see the dragon-like creatures fade out of existence.
Alan cannot help but feel a pang of guilt for doing it to the little guys, but what he has in mind is much bigger and much better. Looking at the paper, his hand was starting to sweat from anxiety, and he starts writing new rules for the world:
Old rule: Dragons exist in this world.
Old rule: Dragons have been around ever since the beginnings of time, as the first dragons evolved alongside the first humans.
Old rule: Dragons are magnificent carnivore creatures, with four legs, two wings on their backs that allow flight, horns on their heads and long bodies. The average dragon is around the same size as a horse, with the possibility of certain individuals being bigger or smaller. Dragons are naturally four-legged, however, they are able to balance on their hind-legs by using their tails to balance, although being in this position for too long is uncomfortable for them. Dragons can use their forepaws as hands, allowing them to manipulate objects and even use tools.
Alan stops for a moment, checking if he hadn’t misspelled anything due to nervousness, before he proceeds.
Old rule: Dragons live side by side with humans, as they have ever since the first dragons formed alliances with the first humans, forming a bond of companionship and trust that persists until today.
Yeah, that rule should stop any case of dragons going around destroying cities and devouring people, and it should also stop humans from wanting to kill all dragons.
Alan continued to write down rules.
Old rule: Dragons are sentient creatures, and are capable of speech. They evolved to acquire sentience on the same way humans did, and so, dragons are as smart as humans. Some dragons are smarter or less intelligent than other dragons, just like some humans are smarter or less intelligent than other humans. Dragons have the same learning capacity as humans, being able to learn the same things as them, as well as to learn professions, different languages and to form personal opinions.
Old rule: Due to their sentience and their bond with humans, dragons are not seen as mere animals, instead having their own place on society by human side. Dragons can get professions, vote and do all the things that humans can.
Alan looked at it and thought for a while, before writing one more thing:
Old rule: Due to their sentience and to being part of society, dragons are subject to the same rights and laws as humans. Dragons can be arrested for breaking laws, as well as being criminally prosecuted and even suffering capital punishments, depending on the laws of the location where they live. The same way, if a human commits a criminal act against a dragon they might be punishment on the same level and manner as if the criminal act was committed against a human being.
Old rule: Dragons age on the same manner as humans, and they live just as long. Dragons reach teenagehood at the same time as humans do, and they are considered of legal age on the same age as humans do.
He thought for a moment, and added:
Old rule: Dragons do not have nipples or breasts, and they have genital slits. A male’s penis remains safely tucked inside their slit and only comes out when the male gets aroused. The same way, dragonesses have their vaginas safely hidden inside their slits. However, when walking outside, dragons wear specially made shorts that hide both their slits and their tailholes. There is no law that forbids dragons from going around naked, but most dragons prefer to wear these shorts when in public, for the shake of modesty.
Yeah, that should do it.
Alan breathed as he kept his eyes on the rulebook, and slowly, he looked up to see if the new rules he wrote produced changes.
And he wasn’t disappointed.
The coffee was the same as before, however, there was a noticeable change. Now there were dragons in there.
On a table that was on the middle of the place, there were two dragons. They were sitting on their haunches as they were discussing something, one of them was using his forepaw to eat what seemed to be fish-sticks. On the corner of his eye, Alan could see another dragon, of a golden coloration and a proud pair of bull-like horns on his head, and he was holding a newspaper with his forepaw while he read it. There were even dragon waiters! They were wearing aprons in addition to their shorts, as they went back and forth, balancing on their hind-legs as they used their forepaws to hold the pen and notebook that they used to note down the patrons’ requests.
Alan just looked.
He even ventured to look outside, through the window of the place, and he could see even more dragons. They were walking across the street along with the humans, coming back and forth. Most of them were shorts that fit nicely on their bodies, leaving their hind-legs and tails out while they hid the essential. Some dragons were either landing from a flight to walk into the sidewalk or were walking to the street before they opened their wings and flapped them, taking flight.
It worked. It had truly worked.
Alan, who has dreamed with dragons ever since he could remember, now lived in a world where they were real.
What happens now?
