Growing popularity

The next couple days go by quickly as you prepare to leave. Once word gets out that you were attacked again, your people rally around you, and the call for the defeat of Humanitas grows.

Amid this swell of support, the girls become celebrities. Most of the girls enjoy the attention, most notably Sadie and Uzume. Sadie in particular spends a lot of time in public, enjoying her newfound popularity. Always liked, now she was sought out for everything from artwork to poetry.

Meanwhile, Yura and Lynn basically hide in the house. Always shy, the petite pair were overwhelmed by the fact that they had fans now. In fact, their quiet nature attracted quite a fan base in and out itself. Fortunately, everyone seemed to be respectful so far, but it was something to keep an eye on.

As for yourself, it was amusing how much support you received. Always popular among the people for your goals, not to mention your power, the story of your fight against assassins grows with each retelling. By the time you’re ready to leave, you realize that the days of simply wandering the streets with your girls are done, at least for now.

On the morning you plan to leave, Samara approaches you. “I was wondering if I could join you on this trip, Josh? I like it here, but…I want to stay close to Kali. And you, if I’m honest.”

You hesitate. “You know we’re going into a combat situation, Samara. I can’t promise your safety.”

Samara shrugs. “I may not have my powers, but I can still fight. I…it’s worth the risk to me.”

You think for a moment, then nod. “Fine, but stay close to Kali. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Samara stares at you for a while. Then she speaks in a quiet voice. “Thank you, Josh. Both for letting me come, and for caring. I’m still not used to that.”

You smile and rest a hand on her shoulder. “Of course, Samara. I’m glad it’s something you get to experience, finally.”

She surprises you by stepping closer and hugging you tightly. She rests her head on your chest. “I think I understand now why all these girls flock to you. Empathy and compassion.”

She chuckles. “It doesn’t hurt that you’re cute too.”
