Thinking ahead

That evening, you receive word that your army is closing in on the **** from Humanitas, and they expect to meet them in battle tomorrow. Despite deciding to let your generals handle this, you feel bad letting them go into battle without you. You temper this feeling by the knowledge that the new regime in Humanitas seems to avoid the use of magic. Wether this is a conscious choice or a blind spot you can exploit, you’re unsure.

After leaving Kali to nap in her bed, you got some knowing looks from Elys and Yura, and noted Samara’s absence. You went back to the throne room, where the message from the military was delivered. After concluding your business for the day, you meet up with the girls for dinner, and share what you know.

As usual, Maya is the first to venture an opinion. “Assuming we win the battle, the next step is an attack against their capital, right?”

You nod. “This army has to be just about everyone they have under arms. Beat that, and all that’s left is taking down their leadership.”

Uzume grins. “I’m guessing that’s our job?”

“Yes. Once we’re sure the fanatics are beaten, we need to act quickly to remove this ‘Protector’, Darius. Fanatics tend to build up quickly, but fortunately their message isn’t making them many friends.”

You continue, “We will link up with the army, and while they besiege the city, we will get inside and attack. It’s a bit underhanded, but I don’t deal kindly with people who send assassins after me.”

Yura nods. “You do not need to explain to us. We agree. This is the type of person who hurt us before we found you.”

Lynn smiles. “I’m sure we all imagine doing much worse than you will do, Josh.”

Even Clarissa agrees, though for different reasons. “It’s war, Josh. This is how you fight a war. If they’re not prepared for an **** during a siege, they were doomed anyway.”

You nod. “Thanks for the support. This next bit will upset some of you, though. I’m leaving some of you behind.”

Rachel chuckles. “That should be obvious. Some of us would just be in the way.”

You smile. “I’m bringing Maya, Uzume, Clarissa, Kali, and Ruka. The rest of you will stay.”

You get mostly nods of agreement, though Anna looks nervous. “I wish I could come with you, master. I don’t like not being by you.”

“I understand, Anna. Some people need to stay that have powers, just in case. That’s why you and Sadie are staying.”

Sadie giggles. “Don’t worry, Anna! Joshie will be fine! And we can find some way to pass the time, I’m sure…”

Everyone laughs at that. You shake your head at Sadie. “You’re insatiable, you silly djinn! Are you sure you’re not some kind of sex elemental?”

Sadie winks. “So what if I am? You know you love it!”

You nod. “Everyone loves you, Sadie. Just make sure you take some time out of bed on occasion.”

Sadie giggles again.
