Battle - initial stage

Slowly, the two armies advanced on each other, before finally meeting.

The blades, spears, axes, maces and shields meet. The screams field the air. The goblin in front of Rosa fell, his head rolling on the ground. A woman screamed and fell on the ground as a spear pierced her navel. Green skin fell on his knees, holding a stump of his arm, screaming, before one of the women smashed his head with a mace.

Rosa cursed as she had faced the two goblins hidden behind the shield with a woman tied to it. A normal warrior would either fight defensively, trying not to hurt the hostage, or attack disregarding the safety of the hostage altogether. Rosa was non of those – she was a skilled warrior.

She skillfully attacked the goblins, manoeuvring between the shields, slashing her sabre, killing the goblins, creating a breach. Kari was right behind her, smashing goblins with her mace. Her veterans quickly followed making an even greater breach, attacking the other shield wielders from the sides – if they survived, she would make sure to recruit them into her own retinue. Even some novice soldiers followed her into the breach.

Her path to the goblin chief was open – now only normal goblins stood between her and the target. She frowned… she did not see his bodyguards.

“Hah hah!” Rosa turned to the side. Her brother, fourth of the siblings, was raising his two-handed axe and laughing. “As expected of my sis-Agh!” Rosa watched with horror as a great bolt pierced her brother's chest and send him flying. She knew there was no chance for him to survive that.

Her head snapped in the direction the projectile came from.

On the hill, she saw a ballista, operated by goblins and their elven female slaves.

She cursed and looked over the battlefield. She could either hold the line, go after the ballista or go after the chief. Ballista was the greatest danger to her mother’s army. But with the chief dead, the goblins would scatter.
