A damaged djinn

The trip back to the castle is quiet, even subdued. Despite your victory, you know it cost a lot, even if no permanent damage occurred to your family. You send the dwarves and orcs home, telling them you’ll call upon them when you finish mopping up the remnants of resistance and move against the demon lord.

You’re main concern is Sadie. She has been listless and quiet since she woke up. You ride in the medical wagon with her, and she simply longs to you. Finally, as you near the capital, she speaks.

“I was so scared. Scared of dying, scared of losing everyone, scared of the pain. But do you know what scared me the most, Josh? I was scared that you’d be upset with me, that I let something mess up your plans. Why was that so scary?”

You hug her tighter. “I was scared too, Sadie. I caused you to get hurt. Sometimes I wonder if this was a good idea, coming here. We were happy at home.”

Sadie shakes her head. “You were right to come here. No one else could do what you’ve done.”

You sigh. “Maybe, but people are getting hurt.”

Sadie shushes you with a finger to your lips. “How many more would be hurt without you? You can’t save everyone. You’re doing good here, Josh.”

You smile and gently poke her nose with your finger. “You’re supposed to be the ditzy airhead, Sadie. How did you get so smart!”

Sadie giggles quietly, smiling back. “I guess you’re rubbing off on me, Joshie. Thanks for talking with me, it’s a big help.”

You smile and wink at her. “Maybe we can organize another orgy when we get back. There’s a lot of new girls around us now...”

You smile as a light enters her beautiful blue eyes again, and she smiles bigger. “Promise? Because there’s a djinn here that wants that really bad...”

You laugh to see her coming back to herself.
