Chapter 26
by Wyrda
Through the front gate or over the palisade? Quickly now, the watchman will come around soon...
The front gate!
You quickly resolve to go through the front gate. There's no watchman there, and your armour won't make as much noise as clambering over the palisade. Plus, wouldn't the gate be the last place they would expect an intruder to enter from?
Feeling rather smart, you quickly move clockwise along the wall, following the path the sentry had taken. You don't want to meet him halfway after all. You keep him at a good enough range so that you can track him with ease, while out of earshot of the occasional noise your armour makes when it brushes against the palisade or rubs up against itself. Soon enough, the entrance to the camp lies before you, a large opening in the palisade with a square wooden archway giving it some semblance of structure. The archway about 8 foot tall built out of three planks of dark oak, and looks quite sturdy.
You press flat against the wall and peak into the camp. The campfire is directly visible to you from here, with 3 men sitting by it. The deer you had spotted earlier has been consumed, instead these men are drinking. You smile. Excellent. It would already be hard for them to spot you with the sparse lighting, and now drink may also dull their senses. Directly behind the fire, the largest tent is situated, which you strongly suspect is Karl's. That is your target.
The sound of whistling starts to dim, and you figure the sentry is on the opposite end of the camp. Now is your chance. Counting to three in your head, you take one last look inside, then peek around the entryway. There's no one hiding. A tent is pitched to your left, and a small alleyway between it and the palisade gives the perfect hiding place. You can dash behind it and slowly make your way around towards Karl's tent. Taking one last deep breath, you burst from cover and dash toward the tent.
But, for all your careful reconnaissance, you never thought to look at the ground. The moment you step from your cover and into the camp, you hear a crack from below you. You hope it was a simple twig snapping, but you look down to see some kind of mechanism, two sticks put in upright, and one stick that used to be placed horizontally. That is, until you put your foot through it. "Oh." You think. "That isn't good."
Suddenly, something grabs both of your legs and violently pulls them together. You begin to fall forward, both feet now locked behind you. Your metal greaves slam together, making a loud clanging noise, and you bite your tongue to suppress a shout of pain. But as you put your arms out to break your fall, and the ground comes up to welcome you, it swings away again. Your feet are suddenly, violently yanked upward. And then you realise what has happened. You stepped into a leg snare trap. You swing by your feet, the world suddenly upside-down. Thinking quickly, and knowing that someone probably heard the noise you've made, you summon the power of Lucretia to make your hands glow in holy light. It will burn away the snare. If only you can touch it. You try with all of your strength, bending your stomach in to reach up. You can just see the snare through the mess of your hair. Your hand is so close now... But with a loud exhale your body gives in. You can't do it. Naked, maybe, but the sheer weight of your armour is betraying you. Gasping, panting for air, you try again, but once more your core muscles are not strong enough. That's when you hear a shout from your right. "Oi!" The sentry!
Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no oh no!!!
