He denies it

"I harbor no such feelings toward you. You know this; why do you persist in bringing forth such unpleasant things?"

You're not quite sure why, but with his denial, you know you won't get any further. He is much like you and you would never so outwardly reveal yourself if you knew that it would be utterly hopeless. The sudden feeling of vulnerability disappears and you pull away from the tree and glance towards the sky, its darkness bringing something like comfort to you. You don't understand why, or how you feel when the moon is blotted out with heavy clouds, but you've come to realize that you don't particularly care.

"My words may not convince you," he says suddenly, shattering your resolve to walk away when heavy hands rest on your shoulders and the wind picks up, petals falling and skipping across the air. "But allow me to show you. There is nothing I will not do to convince you of that fact!"
