"It's not that. I just can't take care of you."

"It's not that." You insist. "I just wouldn't be able to take care of you."

"You'd need to take care of me?" She asks. "Like I'm a child?"

"No." you say. "I didn't mean it like that."

It's too late. She storms off in a huff.

That evening, you lay awake in bed. You feel bad about leaving Jane. You haven't even figured out how to bring the subject up with Kate. It is hours before you manage to fall asleep.

The sunlight streaming in through your bedroom window wakes you. Gradually, you become aware that there's bars all around your bed.

As you sit up, the blanket falls off you, revealing that you're wearing {if Girl=true}a short pink nightie. Something crinkles underneath it. You pick up the nightie to reveal {else}a baby blue t-shirt. You don't remember owning a t-shirt like this and you certainly didn't wear it to bed. Looking down past the t-shirt, you find something far weirder. You are wearing{endif} a bulky disposable diaper and not an adult diaper either. This is a baby diaper, printed with cartoon characters, but somehow in your size.

You look at the room past the bars. It's your room but at the same time it's not. It's the same size and the door, wardrobe and window are in the same places. Even the view from the window is familiar. However, everything else is different. You realise you're sitting in a giant cot where your bed was and your desk has been replaced by a similarly large changing table. A variety of baby toys are stacked neatly where you once had a bookcase.
