Chapter 4

Vanessa showed up at the picnic preparations wearing a white sleeveless summer dress with red polka dots that cinches around her waist. The cut was designed to flow down her body while also emphasizing her pert, perky and round C cup breasts.

"Wonderful!" Vanessa says as she reaches up with a gloved hand to adjust the red sun hat perched atop her expensively coiffed hairdo. She was looking at the courtyard setup for her PHAAT group’s picnic. One that was really more of a fancy brunch than anything like a picnic, but let’s not focus on that.

Gourmet food was being cooked inside nearby tents and round tables were set up that could seat 50 people.

Kat was ready to get her hours of community service in, already with an eye on college, along with Gavin. Both were wearing white button shirts. Gavin had on black slacks; Kat had on a black skirt that ended just below the knee. They had both been given a white dishrag they could use for wiping down whatever needed wiping.

They both stood in a line with the other middle schoolers who would be serving food that day as Vanessa looked them over.

“Make sure you have your dishrag with you at all times” Vanessa growled at the group of frightened kids, “that way you won’t be tempted to waste time idling around. Every time you see anything that isn’t sparkling and perfect you should get wiping!”

“You there, there’s a stain on your collar. Fix it or get out.”

She went down the line going over each server, making sure they looked perfect. Having already noticed Kat chatting with Gavin she had her remarks prepared.

For Kat she said, “You, you’re a total mess. Go get that hair under control and report back to me.”

But Gavin was another story. “You. You’re perfect. And adorable!” Vanessa mussed his hair playfully and Gavin smiled with delight. The pretty girl liked him.

After dismissing everyone Kat said, “Don’t tell me you like that stuffy witch.”

“Aw Kat, don’t be jealous.”

Before the brunch began Vanessa stood in the open part of the courtyard in the centre and addressed everyone. Most of them teenagers too from nearby PHAAT chapters. None of them enjoying this abstinence business, but all of them wanting the extra marks for college applications.

“Thank you all for being here today, for the annual PHAAT picnic! I’m so glad to see all of you could make it. We’ve had a great year! Now, I know that some of you have had your troubles keeping up the principles of PHAAT,” Vanessa said, sounding quite superior and 'playfully' wagging her finger.

“But you should know that it can be done. I myself have found that focusing on exercise, a healthy diet and hard work is quite rewarding and has many benefits,” she said striking a pose that showed off her feminine curves.

Vanessa droned on talking about health and exercise and how not having any sex was the only way to be. There were a few golf claps given and some bored looks. Once she was finished speaking the food service began.

Danny came by to see Vanessa and watch the show. He was sitting away from everyone but keeping an eye on the action. He did not want Kat or Gavin to notice him.

Kat had set up a large tray of food and was about to carry it out when Vanessa came by.

“Look at this. You have no idea what you’re doing, do you? This layout is all wrong. Can’t you even carry a tray properly?” she scolded. Kat’s face went red as the other servers looked on.

She then looked at Gavin. “See, my handsome man here has it done right. Good job, Gavin,” she said. Gavin beamed with pride as Kat started to feel some jealousy spring up inside her.

She had no idea what the arrangement had to do with anything, but she didn’t want to be wrong. Once Kat had her tray rearranged she was about to head out to serve. Vanessa stopped her and gave her a tray stand to use. “You be careful. I’ve got my eye on you,” Vanessa said.

That woman has it in for me, Kat thought as she carried the heavy tray out to her table. She opened the folding tray holder and carefully set the tray on top of it. Seconds later the tray holder collapsed, and the tray crashed to the ground.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” Kat said to everyone sitting at her table. Little did she know that Vanessa had pulled the pin out of the tray hold that held the legs together.

Kat headed back to the kitchen to see a scowling Vanessa waiting for her.

“Can’t you do anything right?” Vanessa said angrily.

“I’m so sorry, I don’t know what happened,” Kat said.

“You better get it together or you’re going home with NO CREDIT for this,” Vanessa said and walked off.

Somehow Kat made it through the main course. And the traditional ‘picnic food’ served by the PHAAT group of filet mignon and lobster was bused without a hitch. Now it was on to the dessert. Kat’s nerves were on edge. There was no let up with this Vanessa.

Kat arranged her tray ‘properly’, whatever that meant, and headed out from the serving tents and onto the courtyard. As she was passing one of the tables she tripped and fell forward. The entire dessert tray hit the ground and Kat soon followed. There was big crash. Everyone looked to see Kat on the ground and even worse, their tiramisu! Kat landed on top of the tray and had several desserts stuck to her body. Kat looked up and couldn’t tell had happened but did see Vanessa sitting near where she fell.

Vanessa got up and walked over to Kat and smiled as she helped her up. Then she walked her over to a nearby service tent.

“Wait, I should get the tray,” Kat said.

“Don’t worry someone will take care of it,” Vanessa said as she waved her hands to one of the other workers.

Kat gulped. She was doomed. Vanessa brought her to a service tent because it was “away from everyone” or at least this is what she would say when she got back to her table. But really it was the closest one and everyone could see and hear them. Once she got there, she gave Kat the scolding of her life.

“You are the most incompetent child I have ever had to deal with! You drop trays, you can’t even set them up right. Can you do anything right?”

“But…”

I don’t want your excuses; I want you gone! You are done here, young lady!”

“But…”

“You’re FIRED!!”

Vanessa’s words stung. Kat could feel a hole in her stomach. She looked out and saw that everyone attending and serving saw her firing. Even Gavin. Kat’s eyes welled up with tears. She shouldn’t care but she did. But Vanessa wasn’t done yet.

“And don’t think you’re getting any credit for the pathetic effort you’ve given here, either! I’ll make sure to speak with whoever sent you so this mistake does NOT happen again!”

Vanessa walked back to her table and apologized to everyone. She assured them that no more mishaps would be happening today. Inside she was euphoric. Everything had gone to plan. She had publicly berated and humiliated that dirty little nobody and was assured to finally get what she wanted from Danny.
