I knew it was a bad idea separating with things unsaid, but this wasn’t the time or place to have this conversation. When the limo pulled up to my house, Kaylee’s dad looked over at us like he was noticing us for the first time. He was all smiles, not knowing we were skirting close to an argument. Well, maybe not an argument, but certainly a passionate conversation.
She was still looking out the window, ignoring me completely. I bit the bullet and spoke first. “Talk to you later?” I asked softly. For a moment, I thought she was going to continue ignoring me. Only at the last second did she look my way and nod. I think her dad noticed something was up, but he didn’t say anything as I headed for the door.
“Thanks for coming, Scott.”
“Thanks for inviting me. It was… interesting.”
He chuckled. “Before I forget, you still want to go to the gym tomorrow?”
I glanced back at Kaylee before looking at him. “Yeah.”
“Great! Say… nine?”
“You want me to wake up before noon on a Sunday?” I asked in mock horror. That got a laugh out of him. One last glance back at Kaylee and I exited the limo. I made it to the door, opening it and giving a wave before stepping inside.
In a bad mood, I headed upstairs only to run into Paige. Her eyes narrowed and it looked like she was about to say something but stopped at the last second. Maybe she noticed I wasn’t in the mood for her shit too. Instead, she looked up at my hair and snorted. “So it finally happened. You embraced your inner douchebag. Have to say, the look fits you perfectly.”
Normally, her snide comment would piss me off. Today though? I was thankful for it. She was probably still pissed about me talking to William like that, but I’d take her insults over legitimate anger anytime.
“Thanks, Paige. Really. Your complements always hit right in the heart,” I said as I tapped my fist against the chest.
“Of course. I always go for the heart.” She paused thoughtfully. "Or the jugular."
Shaking my head, I headed for my room and closed the door. Only then did I let out a long breath. Today had been overwhelming. I had a looming, unsettled issue with Kaylee, and I hadn’t gotten a chance to fully decompress what happened with Kayla.
Kicking my shoes off, I flopped back onto the bed and stared at the ceiling, quickly losing myself to my thoughts. I wondered if I should send Kaylee a text, but nixed the idea. We needed some time to collect our thoughts and let the emotions cool. Besides, this was a conversation that needed to take place face-to-face.
