Unlock the treasure

Putting the keys in your belt pouch and drawing your gladius you push the door open slowly. Even as the door starts to move, golden light pours through the cracks around the door. After exploring the basement rooms with just a poorly burning lantern, the warm yellow light seems as bright as the noonday sun. As the door opened some more you hear a squeak of either fear or excitement. The voice definitely sounded female but there could well be more mercenaries down here. You push the door open with a hard shove and step back into an high guard stance. Ahead of you are two large armored figures wearing pointed helmets holding shields and broad headed spears, they are in defensive positions waiting calmly for any attack.

There is movement behind them , and although you can’t be sure because your eyes are still adjusting you think they must be guarding a group of women. You are surprised they aren’t attacking you immediately, with the brightness of the room you are at a real disadvantage if they attack. Their hesitation might have cost them their lives, because already your eyes are adjusting.
“Should we charge them?” whispers Sarge “We could catch them by surprise.”
