I ignored Kouki and asked him, "What's going on?"

"Apparently, nothing more than a common invasion this time around," he said curiously and pulled back his sleeve to show some kind of strange contraption with a maze of blinking lights on it. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be fine, but this is clearly not the correct time stream." Then he fiddled with the device and it made a few sharp squeaks and whistles. "Wish me better luck next time," he said, and then with a flash of light vanished completely.

"Did you see..." I asked, but turned and everyone else had already run off, leaving me standing alone in the setting sun standing in the old ruins. I'm not sure how long I boggled there, lost in confusion, but a war horn sounding brought me back to reality. I ran to join Kouki back at our small home, unsure how we were going to survive, but strangely feeling like everything would somehow work out in the end.
