Keep your escape route open

The last thing that think you should do is lock yourself into a building with an unknown number of well trained mercenaries, especially **** mercenaries who are fighting for their lives. You decide to close the doors, but do not bar them behind you. The room is darker now but you can still see clearly enough to make out the shape of the well dressed clerk’s body where he slumped to the floor. A heavy pouch is hanging from his belt, taking it you see more gold in one place than all the gold you have ever owned put together – not bad, no, better than that, fucking awesome. You hear more yells from above.

“Demonius! Get those arrows up here now. You useless farts aren’t even willing to fight for your own city. Do you think a full purse will spare your life now?” Glancing at the man who fainted you notice that he does have a full purse at his belt. Cutting it from him you are pleased by the its weight as you drop it into your pouch. Opening the small door on the right of the stairs you see a set of steps lit by a small lantern leading down into the basement, the stench of unwashed bodies and fecal mold pours up from the narrow steps and you hear the clink of chains.

Stepping back you nearly trip over the bundle of arrows and you have an idea how to surprise the mercenaries defending the tower. You could at least check out what you were up against if you carried the arrows up the stairs. In this dim light and with the battle outside the tower the mercenaries probably wouldn’t notice your army uniform.
