Chapter 5 by fantaghiro
What's next?
"You're my son, Tim..."
"Of course I remember you, Tim..." She whispered softly.
"How do you remember me?" You asked with a bit of anxiety in your tone.
"..." A certain silence stood about the room that left you, and, even the doctors', on the edge of your seats. Finally, your mother softly inhaled as to begin speaking.
"...You're... You're my son, Tim." After saying which, a weak, tired smile, but, nonetheless, a smile, spread across her face. A smile of relief spread across yours.
"Mom!" you shouted joyously.
You leaned in as to give her a hug, seeing as she was too weak to meet you halfway. The two of you embraced warmly. And held the hug for one really moment.
"This..." You began, trailing off.
"Yeah, Tim?" Your mother asked.
"...Is nothing short of a miracle." You smiled.
"I know, Honey. 'm so glad you're okay..." She warmly concurred.
"I'm glad you're alright also. But, I have to ask, you're not at all shocked that you're... In a random teenage girl's body?"
"Of course I am, Son, I'm just too weak to show it right now... Plus, as I drifted in and out of consciousness, I could hear and see all the commotion about 'my' new body. That sort of gave me time to take it all in." She pronounced.
"Do you know whose body you're in?" You curiously inquired.
"Yeah, that little bully you've had throughout public school, Lindsey. I feel bad for her and her parents though. She was too young to die..."
"Yeah..." You agreed,
"Wait!" She shouted much louder, breaking the tired state of your mother, gaining the attention of yourself and Doctors' Kerry and Saunders.
"What is it, Mom?!" You asked, concernedly.
"..." Another silence spread about the room, though, this one was particularly anxious. Your mother closed her eyes and just stood still.
You decided to ask again. "Mom?"
You then saw her eyes open once again, though, this time, the warm, lovely look of your mother was gone. This time, you saw Lindsey.
She spoke up. "Who the hell are you calling 'Mom,' Kid?" She inquired in the obnoxious, snooty tone of Lindsey.
"Ugh..." You stood awkwardly.
"Wait! I know you!"
"How!"
"Your'e Tim! Tim... Something. You're that kid who I have for every class! My personal go-to place for money, and answers to homework and stuff."
You stood and stared, not knowing what to do.
"Come on, Mom! Snap out of it!" You firmly shouted.
"Stop calling me 'Mom!' And tell me why I'm in the hospital!" She inquired, gesturing to the gown she donned.
"Mom," you emphasized. "My name is Timothy Connors. I'm your 18 year old son, and you have a 14 year old daughter named Tabitha. You also have a husband named Paul, whose 43 years old. My girlfriend is named Allison Lowry, who's also 18. You're maiden name is Springer You had me when you were 22! You said it was one of the greatest, most magical days of your life... Come on! You have to remember!"
"What the hell are you talking about?" She said, suddenly stopping herself.
After her brief pause, she began again. "Tim? Timothy, Honey?" She called, voice quivering, to the point of tears.
You, also almost on the edge of tears, called. "Mom!" You two proceeded to embrace again.
"Timmy! Baby, I'm so sorry I forgot, I kind of lost it there..." She said apologetically.
"It's... It's fine... You're here now so..."
"It's so hard to describe. When all that happened, when I started to act like Lindsey, it's kind of like if I were in the driver's seat, operating the body, then, suddenly, the passenger took it upon themselves to operate the body rather than myself... And... I couldn't do anything. Just watch the passenger drive." She explained.
"Oh, God..." Doctor Kerry interjected.
"What is it, Doctor?" Your mother softly asked.
"It's exactly what we feared..." Saunders added.
"What's that?" You asked.
"Rather simple." Doctor Saunders began. "You see, when we performed the transplant, that is, your mother's brain to Lindsey's body, we only made it to where your mother's personality was still her own, but, also to where she can operate the body, like she said."
"So, why did I forget I was... Me?" Your mother asked.
"Well, we still haven;t quite figured that out..." Doctor Kerry said, solemnly.
"What do you mean you don't know?!" You shouted.
"Hold on, Son! I was getting to the rest. It's true, we don't know what happened there, when you forgot your true identity. But, here's what we think." Doctor Kerry said, gesturing to Doctor Saunders.
"... We think that the brain is adapting to Lindsey's body, like a person would adapt to a new environment if placed in one. In that, while the brain is learning to operate the motor functions of Lindsey's body, the body being operated may affect the brain."
"The best way to put it is like on-again, off-again amnesia. She remembers one moment, totally blanks out the other. So, when the Jennifer part of your brain isn't in control, Lindsey is. You follow?" Doctor Kerry asked.
"Yeah... Kind of." You and your mother answered simultaneously.
"So, how do we know when It'll happen?" Your mother asked.
"We don't. It's unpredictable." Doctor Saunders answered.
That silence spread about the room again.

The Ultimate Transplant
Someone you know is given a new body & life
PLEASE ADD CHAPTERS! A close friend or family member is horribly injured in an accident. As they lay dying in the emergency room, another patient dies of a brain aneurysm. Both of them are organ donors, so a surgeon decides it's the perfect opportunity for him to try an experimental surgery. He transplants the victim's higher brain (the cerebellum) to the donor's body in an attempt to 'save' a life. Amazingly it works. But the surgery was not approved so the hospital convinces the families to keep quiet, arguing that revealing this operation to the public would bring never-ending media attention to all involved. That means that the patient will have to publicly assume the identity of the donor. What will this mean to your friends and family? Who else will you tell? Although you will spend a lot of time and effort giving support, how will all this alter your relationship to the patient? And how will he or she adapt to a complete change of body and identity? Many transformation stories focus on the change or victim, so I thought it would be interesting to instead have the POV be someone who sees the change from the outside. Writers feel free to explore a change in age, gender, class or ethnicity - and the repercussions that change would have on the main character (and others).
