Chapter 8
by
Manbear
Fight or save your skin?
Go for it!
Dropping the bundle of arrows to the floor you wait for the first two archers to get arrows and turn back to the slits that overlooked the walls. As the third archer bent over you chopped viciously at the back of his neck. ‘Not very noble you think but effective.’ Even though the archer fell nearly soundlessly one of the archers sensed something wrong and turned back to see you standing over the twitching body. “Alarm” he cried as he turned towards you notching another arrow. ‘A bow is just about the most useless weapon to use in a small space’ you think to yourself. As he starts drawing back the shaft, you slash at the bow. When a bow has even a shallow cut in it, it becomes very unreliable. As the archer pulls back the bow to full draw, the top arm snaps at the weak point, and your gladius slices the front of his throat. The man’s second cry came out as a gurgle and he staggered back with his hands at his throat.
You turn to the last archer as he finished drawing a nasty looking long knife from his belt. “Alarm” yelled this man as he backed away from you. You could hear the sounds of footsteps on the stairs. This is not going well you think. Tossing your sword at the archer’s face you lounge forward grabbing the man by his arm and belt, turning you pivot the man over your hip and send him tumbling down the open stairwell onto the neck and shoulders of the surprised mercenary coming up the stairs. Both men slid down several steps before they recover their footing. You take the opportunity to slam shut the trapdoor, there was a small bolt that could be used to lock the hatch and you slide it home just as a loud slam comes from the bottom of the hatch. This will not hold for long. Running to the arrow slits you yell down:
“Hurry up! I’ve taken out the archers, but the men inside are pretty mad.” After a stunned pause you heard your sergeant ask questioningly “Thadeus?”
“Yes it’s me, but get that door down.” The men outside redouble their attack on the door and you notice a very loud silence from below. Moving as quietly as you can to the hatch you peep through a crack and see the room below is now empty. Opening the hatch you make it down the stairs just as the tower door burst open.
“What took you so long” you ask as the men stare into the room with a mixture of awe and doubt. “Come on in” you say “There is food and drink downstairs, and a whole city to loot just outside the door.”
Your cohort took terrible loses in the ****. The captain and two of the three sergeants were missing along with all but a dozen or so of your companions. Leading the men downstairs you see that the mercenaries have left the tower door open as they fled.
“Lock that door” you say and two men leap forward to obey the order. As the others head for the food the sergeant approaches you.
“Eh-hem” he asks nervously “Will we be staying here long or are we heading into the city? I mean if we let these men drink as much as they like they will be pretty useless for anything else you have planned.”
Do you let the men drink or do you have other plans?
