Chapter 56 by SkyDreamer SkyDreamer

Exhaustion will soon set in...

She plans her next move

Digit sat perched on a tree branch, watching the dawn sun peek through the leaves as she ate the remainder of her food ration. She had the air of a grizzled warrior about her, like a veteran of a thousand battles. Fear and confusion were still swirling inside her, but they were beginning to give way to a much stronger emotion: annoyance.

She'd woken up lost and alone, been **** into combat scenarios with creatures that far outnumbered and outpowered her, and she'd absolutely kicked their asses! If this was a test, she felt that she should've already earned more than a passing grade. And yet still, no-one had shown up to relieve her. It was time to face facts: this was just a regular, mundane lost-in-the-woods situation.

She wanted to go home. Her body ached from exertion, her sleep schedule was utterly fucked from waking up in the middle of the night, and... "Pleh!" The only food available to her had bits of grass and dirt stuck to it.

Where even was home from here though? She had no frame of reference. This forest might be miles away; it could even be on an island! Or another plane of reality entirely! That last one seemed unlikely, but it just showed how lacking she was in intel.

She summoned a compass in the palm of her hand. The needle spun for a moment before settling down to firmly point to her left. So the sun still rose from the east, at least... even just that shred of normalcy was oddly reassuring.

The compass poofed as she got to her wings, swallowing down the last of the meat. She picked up her rupee and turned to face the glow of rising sun once again; if she had to explore, then sticking to one direction would at least keep her from going in circles.

Her first mission should be to find a river, for three reasons. First and foremost, a source of drinking water would be crucial to her survival, if she was indeed to spend a prolonged chunk of time stuck out here. Secondly, following the river would be an even better means of not losing her way as she tried to find the forest's edge.

And lastly, civilization always congregated around water sources. Finding other people to talk to posed her best chance at finding any kind of answers to the myriad of questions swirling in her brain. If only she hadn't lost that wolf girl...

With all of this in mind, she set off slowly eastward, keeping her ears peeled for the sounds of running water as she went. She also kept her senses on alert for further monster attacks: if something got the jump on her for once, it would probably turn out a lot worse than her previous encounters...

(1 action: eat meat jerky)

(1 action: use prestidigitation to briefly summon a compass)

(1 action: travel east in search of a river)

Can she find what she's looking for, before something finds her?
